No wild pokemon XP run, HGSS edition. The idea was to see if earlier games really were harder than gen 6 or not by never killing a wild pokemon and getting xp from it. Emerald and Leafgreen were fine.

This is at the E4 and I think I've exhausted every trainer in Johto. I might be in trouble. Not only does Johto have a retarded level curve (trainers just south of Blackthorne happily using level 27~ pokemon while Claire throws here level 37 Dragonairs at you), all the optional areas (Deep Mt. Mortar, Whirl Islands) have no trainers. I had to give up training a full team halfway and focus on pouring xp onto my main 4, too.

My main worry is Lance and his 3 hacked Dragonites. Kingdra's Blizzard won't be able to OHKO them with at this level but will die to their Outrage and Dragon Rush immedaitely. They outspeed her too, so I have to put my choice scarf on it. My options are:

1. Stick Exp share on Kingdra and try and get her to level 45 along with stocked-up rare candies, which is the minimum needed to guarantee OHKO on level 50 Dragonites with Blizzard
2. Do what GF probably intended and do a bit of grinding on wild mons in the optional areas, only what I run into while trying to explore or looking for wild Pokemon
3. Use X-items, which is a guaranteed win anyway so I don't really want to do it

Any thoughts?

Actually made it, without needing any of my rare candies. Scizor was the fucking MVP, Technician is the best ability for in-game when you only have shitty moves.

Scizor solo'd Will, and was important for just about everyone. Seeds + Sleep from Exeggutor was how I dealt with cunts like Koga's Muk, and was necessary for Lance's Gyarados too.

Bruno was a cheating fuck and his Swagger Hitmonlee actually made me reset because confusion hit every time, and Karen made me reset once because her Dark Pulse kept flinching me, fucking bitch. Luckily, by Lance my Kingdra siphoned off enough XP to be able to OHKO his level 49 Dragonites. His level 50 one survived Blizzard, but locked itself into outrage for my Scizor to kill it.

This is the worse one to run a no xp game on so far, due to lack of trainers and fucked level curve. I had to limit my main party to 4 Pokemon.

Johto's starved for good pokemon in general. You can buy the fire blast TM and use that and the sludge bomb TM on Nidoking if you're so inclined. If you want a poison type, there's Gengar and Crobat. In fact, Crobat covers Pidgeot's niche too, and much better.

Honestly I did something similar with Emerald and though sometimes I had to go against some wilds I had one of the most garbage teams ever. I made it and honestly it didn't feel much harder aside from the fact my team was shit for Hoenn.

But I blame that on me playing Emerald for it. I'd probably get fucked without lube in Platinum.

Also no grinding Exp. Share off in XY was surprisingly scary for me at times since the game assumes you have the share on and a gigantic rotating team so the level curve has enough spikes to kill Megaman.

I stopped doing these because I felt like actually doing runs as experiments because of this board being dedicating to shitflinging about Gen 6 felt far from worth it to me. I know you've probably gotten way too many shitty defenses about actual flaws from mouthbreathing retards but I just feel like even if you do this, someone else could and have a different experience. What then? Back to the old ENTITLED vs APOLOGIST stuff the board has been flooded in since the Maison reared it's ugly head again?

Though if you enjoy it go ahead. That's what really matters.

It did feel pretty hard for me, I had to rely on Gardevoir setting up opportunistically on enemy shitmons for later game.

I haven't posted much about these actually. Since when were there many vocal gen 6 defenders, anyway? I think I'll leave the soulsilver run as this. Can you elaborate more about your XY run?

Well I remember trying to do no grinding at least. My memory there was probably horrifically accurate. That probably changed later on since my memory is hazy. I was still underleveled since the notorious lack of Pokémon on trainers means a lower exp yield as well. I had a team filled with some low tier stuff like Golduck, Eviolite Fennekin, and even a Timid Farfetch'd. I was also doing no healing items so maybe that's why I might have ditched the grind rule.

As for Emerald I only had a team of "5". Blaziken/Breloom/Solrock/Sableye/Peliper was my team. I say "5" because I had an HM slave Spheal that evolved in the middle of the E4 and healing item stalled Wallace's Milotic and gething in the occasional Rock Smash so Blaziken could finish it.

I also did a regular Emerald run recently because why not and most of the difficulty felt like some of the bad movepools. I always felt like Gen 4 was when movepools were finally good.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Gen 6 isn't an easier gen, it is. Though I do find the same to be true for RSE save some instances like the Emerald twins, I just don't find it to be some super drastic drop all at once.

But then again I feel Gen 4 was the only Gen to get the base difficulty just right.

I actually had less trouble on the challenge run then the regular run overall. Though the other run made me feel like Wallace was a lacking champion. Glacial and Drake scared me more than Wallace did. Though I did use the special bulk titan that is Regice so that might explain it.

Still I'll always brag that I beat Mence with a Nosepass that wasn't even overleveled if memory serves me right.

Honestly half of that fight was Regice

As for the other run I was scared since I had nothing to bulk the Water/Ice onslaught but Sealeo who despite being well over a dozen levels under Wallace tanked Milotic's hits and helped me gain momentum. Breloom was crucial in both runs for Ludicolo, and in the first Shock Wave Pelipper was a lifesaver.

With X items it becomes pretty simple, yeah, so I like to not rely on them either, or at least limit myself to those you find on the ground during the game. I remember in my HeartGold playthrough Meganium with Reflect/Light Screen and Ampharos with its high SpDef emerged as the true MVPs that pulled through a lot of bullshit.

After failing a Y and a White Nuzlocke, which were my first ones, I decided to try doing a LeafGreen Nuzlocke, just to get a win under my belt.

I like having all my pokemon at the exact same level, so picking up a new pokemon (especially three of them) involves plenty of grinding.

The next gym I'd be able to challenge would be Erika, whose highest pokemon are at 29, so that's the minimum level I'd have to grind them to. Which is only 15 levels, but it still takes time.

I'll probably commit to my original idea anyway. Can't give up on a self-imposed challenge when things get... I was going to say "hard", but this is more "inconvenient".

Doing a playthrough of Omega Ruby, trying to use pokemon that I've never used before. So far my team is:

Grovyle is close to evolving, and Zangoose is kicking way more ass than I anticipated. It's attack stat is cray. I'm going to need Tentacool for Flannery soon, but my God, it's SO shit. I mean, I didn't really expect it to be that great given that it's an early route 'mon and it's everywhere, but I didn't expect it to suck as much as it does.

I'm thinking about switching it out for Azumarill after Flannery, thoughts?

Vanilluxe: surprisingly useful. Wound up being a sleeper bro. Starting to see past the dumb ice cream design.

Jellicent: I'm impressed by this one. Never used it before because I usually use Samurott, but I'm glad i did.

Last spot is for Zekrom, since I haven't used a legendary since my original sapphire run when the game first came out in 2003, and I want to give it a shot.

I actually didn't evolve it until 41, when it leaned dream eater. At the moment it's running psychic, shadow ball, hypnosis, and dream eater, and in post game honestly I'll probably replace dream eater with energy ball and keep hypnosis for catching purposes. It's not a bad pokemon, but it's one of the reasons I try not to use a lot of monotype pokemon. A lot of them can only learn stabs and one or two other things through tms

Restarted both Platinum and White, so here's part one. Using mons I've never tried before, but might use, at most, one previous bro from an old team. In Platinum's case, Gastrodon if Floatzel ends up being too squishy again like my first attempt to use him on my original playthrough. Plus Barry had one since I picked Turtwig and I prefer not using the same ones as my Rival minsu a few exceptions.

Black version, currently grinding so I can beat the post-game trainers and challenge the Pokemon League again. I didn't even remember how annoying the level spike is in BW. When you beat the league, your team is probably around level 50-54, and then the regular trainers challenge you with level 67 Pokemon. It's ridiculous. You pretty much have no other choice but to kick Audino ass and somehow try to prevent your motivation from dying.

However, Simisage turned out to be a complete killing machine. I hate the monkeys because of their designs, but I wanted to use Mons that I haven't used before so I picked the grass monkey, and goddamn does it wreck shit. This thing is so powerful and has great coverage. Definitely recommended for everyone. I also finally got to use Cryogonal, a Pokemon I've wanted to use for a long time. I originally had a Musharna in my team but replaced it with Cryogonal because I like the snowflake more.

The Dragonite is just for field moves and nothing else. It knows Fly, Surf, Strength and Cut.

Well, depends on what you need since this thing has a great movepool, but I'm personally running Seed Bomb, Acrobatics, Brick Break and Rock Slide. Dig and Shadow Claw / Crunch are also viable options. I definitely recommend running a physical set since there are a lot of Fighting-type opponents in Gen V along with other Mons that give Attack EVs so you can EV train the monkey pretty easily. That's probably a major why Simisage ends up hitting so hard, although mine also has a +Atk nature which is a blessing. Anyway, once it learns Seed Bomb (which happens quite early, by the way) there are no brakes on the rape train. Just click Seed Bomb and watch things die. And even though you can't run an item with it, I definitely recommend Acrobatics for all those Fighting-types and also for its sheer power.

Thanks a lot. Mine has a gentle nature and thus lowered defense, so I should be cautious putting him up against Fighting types. I was really stoked to see it learned Seed Bomb since on my last Platinum playthrough I was so disappointed when I learned I couldn't replace my Torterra's Razor Leaf with it until post game.

Give Tentacruel a chance. I've heard he's got a great movepool. Can't say much about the Sandshrew line, besides the Sp. Attack stat being garbage makes sense because he's a physical attacker with a matching movepool. I'd give him a chance too.

Replaying Alpha Sapphire, always ended up with a lack of water pokemon as I usually catch stuff earlier in the game or wait for certain pokes later on, but I decided I wanted to take full advantage of the water in Hoenn and catch stuff only found via fishing or diving.

Shit, don't scare me like that anon. I had to double check but thankfully her Emolgas only have Aerial Ace as a flying move. And yeah, I have Pignite's Rollout, Whirlipede's Iron Defense + Poison Point ability since all her attaks are physical, and I taught Dig to Tirtouga as a last resort. If that doesn't work, I'll grind Whirlipede to evolve and get Baton Pass to try and wall her with some iron defense on Pignite or Tirtouga.

For once I'm glad I got my facts wrong. I could have sworn one of Elesa's pokémon had it but it seems I confused it with Skyla's pokémon. Volt Switch is still going to be a pain, too, though.

Sounds like a good plan. In my case, if it gets really difficult, I'll do what I did the last time and get a Boldore. But that's just Plan Despair.

I commend your effort. I just beat Lance on a second playthrough not too long ago without any Ice types or moves and it was a major hassle. I didn't like the idea of banging my head against a wall until it falls by repeatedly challenging E4 expecting to lose (and make my mons hate me), but HG/SS is was pushing it with its level curve and Lance's three underleveled Dragonites.

Bulba says you don't need event pokemon for completion and the shiny charm which is nice. They are being given out all year though so a guy like me still wants them.

I'm having a little extra trouble with completion since, if I can, I want the boxes filled up with each evolutionary stage. I usually end up trading my only copy of something on GTS so I end up doing more breeding to fill in the spaces.
