I usually base my choice on the exclusive pokemon/what you can catch early-ish.

I think a decent chunk of people do this, so whichever has the more popular pokemon available early will probably sell better.

Besides the graphic interface and presumably new backgrounds, no. There was no reason to expect anything more than that. It's not like other gens where they had to make new sprites. Actually it would have been like BW where they actually didn't make many new sprites and the difference would be BW had the moving sprites gimmick and there is no visual gimmick to differentiate them. There may be some new or improved animations.

Targetcuck here, I actually checked the preorder counts for my district yesterday. Moon is outselling Sun in every store except I think one. But this is in no way definitive proof due to each store only getting 10 preorder cards for each game, plus the fact that Target isn't really the first place you go to when you want to preorder something.

better comparison is gen VI to gens III-V. gens I & II were out at the height of the fad period. it leveled off more around gen III.

i don't know specific numbers, but i know it's really not dying. the games still sell millions of units.
