I remember the Johto Thread and how I asked if anyone had a higher resolution version of the picture I posted.

Guess what? I found a program called "waifu 2x" for windows and decided to give it a try. I was impressed to say the least, and I present you: the 2x upscaled version of this pic for anyone to print. As for myself, I upscaled that one again and I'm going to print it.

It's hard to explain without sounding autistic (although maybe that's why we use the word "comfy,") but why was Sinnoh in-particular so good at making this atmosphere of quiet supernatural adventure? Especially apparent in places like the Old Chateau and Spring Path, but also in places like Eterna City, the Canalave Library, and the Solaceon Ruins you just get this atmosphere of ancient, mystical history, even after you've done every objective in the area.

In gen 6 it feels more like the game has to hammer you over the head with "THIS IS CUTTING-EDGE SCIENCE!" or "THIS IS ANCIENT MAGIC FROM A LEGENDARY POKEMON!" In Sinnoh, there really is this prevailing feeling of a quiet, ambiguous magic bringing everything together, whether it's directly related to the Pokemon or not.

A lot of mine comes from lurking here, honestly. I have a habit of hoarding images so I usually have something to post. Sometimes if someone asks for something specific I'll go hunting for a specific theme via google images. I'm sure most people trawl tumblr, da, and pivix for art as well.

I think a lot of it had to do with consistent colour pallets and sprites. Everything Gen4 looks so different from Gen5 despite using the same hardware.
Gen 5 did that pseudo 3d stuff that wasn't awful, but on such a small screen it lead to really obvious aliasing and bad looking motion in some parts.
Gen 4 looked good, consistent and had great music. They focused on a lot of environmental things in their gameplay, like the snow and the swamps, and the areas with constant rainfall. The thing about design is that it's easy to notice when it's bad, but hard to explain when it's good. I'm no expert.

For your next assignment class, every time you post a pic in a comfy thread, you have to try to point out good elements of design in the pokemon series that lends itself to 'comfy'.
