Anyone else excited for Alola based on what we've seen of the overworld? Not once has there been anything resembling the traditional top-down camera angle at all, which leads me to believe they've abandoned it altogether. The geography highlights this, as everything is more vast and the individual stretches of land seem to be bigger. Some parts genuinely look like a fully explorable 3d landscape, and anything gridlike surrounded by the boring tree borders seems to be gone entirely.

This. XY ultimately seemed to be a transition, which although not completely justifying it's poor quality, at least excuses it. There were parts that awkwardly dabbled in between actually being 3D and being 2D with 3D models. We lost the charming pixel art and sprites in XY. The entire series felt like it lost something. But we're getting something back now, and I have a gut feeling it's gonna be fucking great.

I don't care too much about the camera in most cases top down is way more practical.
The fact that the tile based system seems to be gone, however is a godsend, the region looks so much more realistic.

Same, I love how the endless tree borders and tile bases maps are basically gone, the game looks so much better in 3d this way.
Looking at the map, the region also looks a lot more nonlinear, almost every path branches off.
This games gonna be good SENPAI.
