If the islands in the map image released were all connected instead of being islands, and the map zoomed into slightly, the map would look no "smaller" than Kalos, Unova, or Sinnoh.

The problem people are having is that their idea of what "islands" are like is probably literally derived from stuff like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker where islands are depicted as isolated dots of land that can be explored in full in just a matter of moments, and maybe never visited an island that wasn't something in some lake somewhere.

In relation to an individual human being, most actual islands are fucking gigantic.

I live on an island that has a four major counties situated on it, a railroad network, a six lane freeway running end to end (not to mention a second four lane highway as well), and it would take about 4 hours with GOOD traffic to drive the entire length, and that's assuming a driving speed of at about 65 miles per hour, though obviously the road isn't a literal straight line so the MPH doesn't automatically equate to the length of the road.

People can basically live their entire lives on this island and really only leave because they feel like it, I've only seen maybe 20% of it and I'm someone who goes out of their way to visit parks and go hiking and go to events in different towns and shit.

And it would take maybe FIVE OR SIX of the island I live on to amount to the land mass of the SMALLEST of the major Hawaiian islands upon which Alola is based.

You guys need to calm down and stop making up shit to complain about before we've even played the games.

The main issue is that they made an archipelago region but wont let you link the different islands by yourself (through surfing water routes)
Instead, you get some useless water routes along the coast and travel between islands will be made on ship through cut scenes
What a waste...

B. They just took a shitstorm of criticism for Hoenn having too much surfing in uninteresting water routes in ORAS, what do you expect from them?

More simply put, Pokémon players are used to region design concepts that give the IMPRESSION of traveling large, epic distances without actually doing so, while Mother 3 for instance has a much more "modest" looking map but the scope of exploration when playing the game is similar or greater than Unova or Kalos.

more like 3-5%, if you actually look at the real in-game map sizes (pic related) instead of beleiving /vp/ fearmongering memes, you'll see that island is clearly significantly smaller than the other three. The areas in those two screenshots are not ten percent of the map by any means

Obviously the islands are going to be connected through cave tunnels formed from old magma chambers. Also if you look at the tiny island of the cost of [desert region island], it is clearly meant to be traveled to so there must be some way of getting there not involving a boat because we all remember how shitty that was in FR/LG and DP.

Also there is port on the island not surrounded by rock things.

Do you literally think the water is "taking up" space that otherwise would be filled with new land?

That's like saying that all the land visible on the art map of Kalos that aren't routes, cities, or dungeons are "uselss" or account for places that SHOULD have "been in the game" but were instead "stolen" from you somehow.
