Low hp music muted the much superior normal battle theme thus becoming super fucking annoying after a while, especially if you played competitively and shit would just keep switching on and off due to people swapping their low HP Pokemon all the time. Gen 6 did it the best IMO - three short beeps to warn the player that Pokemon's HP is getting low, and then you could go back to enjoying your battle music of choice.

Last pokemon theme was just plain bad, and it failed to evoke the feeling of "epicness" since no Unova gym had more than 3 Pokemon and they all went down very easily.

The last gym leader pokémon theme was great. The low health one overrides whatever (usually pretty good) music that's playing.
Also it's a lot more annoying than the beeping ever was, I was never bothered by it, but the low health theme makes me want to pull my fucking hair out.

Gen 6 did it best, just let it beep a couple of times and stop.

THIS. If they did this, holy shit. The variations which allude to the Leader's specialty are what made the Gyms so interesting in Gen V.
