Modern Ash is just Sinnoh Ash more flanderized. Classic Ash was more '90s in attitude, which more people seem to like in characters more in the west. Seriously, does anyone actually care about Ash anymore? I thought XY was liked mainly because of the animation and waifufags. There is no reboot in the anime, it's simply a connected story. Ash hasnt forgotten about his past journey, he has simply moved on to current journeys. This is also proven in almost every new series where they bring back old characters for a few. (Misty in AG; May in DP; Dawn in BW; and hopefully Iris in XY) Also, Brock has been a companion of Ash for 3 series (OS, AG, DP). Ash has flashbacks of Pallett Town in XY as well. Everything is canon. Ash has forgotten nothing.
