Second up. I may have fallen more in love with it because of XY. But not because of the Fairy type. Because of Amie.

I caught it as an Azurill, but didn't use it for a while so I could get to a point where I could rush happiness and get a Marill quickly. Usually I get a male named Mario, but this one was a girl, so I named it Marina.

When I finally started training it, I'd play with it in Amie and it. Was. Adorable. I'd call out "Mariiinaaa" and I feel like an idiot explaining this. But basically I became offended anytime anyone knocked out my watermouse.

It's pretty much just like what happened with Ampharos. I'd already grabbed a Mareep early on in Silver, but by the time I got to Olivine and realized there was an Ampharos who was sick in danger, I felt more protective of my own.

Totodile hasn't always been my favorite, though. When I first played Silver, I chose Cyndaquil and at the time, he was my favorite Johto starter for a while. It wasn't until Gen 6 when I saw the 3D model for Totodile and I instantly fell in love with how derpy his little arms flailed around. I have also gotten 2 legit shiny Totodiles; one from Soul Silver soft resetting and the other one unexpectedly from trying to breed for a competitive Totodile with Sheer Force (it ended up having flawless IVs)
