It'll be fine. After the first gym, you have to travel across the ocean, but you're given lucario with either lucarionite sun or moon, depending on your version.

both lucarios automatically know surf, and both have a water absorb as abilities, but sun is steel/electric and moon is steel/grass. And they come at level 50

Hoenn was the first game Masuda directed, and he's directed every new Gen since.

The good news is, he's retiring soon, more than likely after SM. Sugimori already retired this past year or so.

The only reason ORAS was worse was, if you read the interview in the strategy guide, Masuda was pretty much breathing down Ohmori's neck the whole dev process. Ohmori gave us DexNav. The dude was the lead Game Designer on most Gens. He's also next in line after Masuda, which is good. I trust him.

Ohmura has already replaced Sugimori in the art department, and in the ORAS Strategy Guide interview Masuda says he's preparing the rest younger staff to take over. The guy who directed ORAS is going to be doing Gen 8, more than likely. And without Masuda, it should be leagues beyond ORAS and XY, even SM.

The seas are too dangerous for players to traverse.

Each island will be a compact, efficient adventure.

Varied. Water isn't inherently bad, but Hoenn was too much. Another problem is that Hoenn had most of them back to back.

There's like 5-7 in a row, not even taking into account the dive routes.

Personally I love snowy locations, but those are rare and usually suck. Only Sinnoh did them good.

Deserts are usually the worst. Relic Castle was the closest I got to enjoying a deserty location.

Grass routes are comfy as long as there isn't too many, or they can get boring.

Swamps are underrated.

Mountains are GOAT. Mt. Silver and Coronet are very rewarding to explore.

Ruins are great, Alph remains one of the most intriguing locations to date.

Volcanoes are ok.

Spooky towers/houses are great, there should be at least 1 per gen IMO. Bonus points if they have good lore, or intrigue to them.

Speaking of lore, any location with lore to uncover is a plus IMO. OR/AS sucked dick, but Sea Mauville was a neat idea and a step in the right direction to keeping lorefags interested in the games. Piecing together the events and shit of that abandoned place was neat.

Ice caves are ok if they aren't too long.

Regular caves are hit and miss. Can be huge chores, or just boring.

Forests are shit. More than 1 per game, and you've lost me. Except Pinwheel, quite liked that one.

Basically, I like stuff that are comfy, creepy, or stand out. If it's another bread-n-butter forest/cave/water route.

What I want more of: Routes with houses, and generally lived in areas. I dont see why all the towns and cities should be combatless locations. Gen 5 had quite a few places like this, but thats about it.

I dont have a problem with a few water routes here and there. What i do have a problem with is too many of them, with little to no pokemon variety.

Add in some islands with towns on them, or hell, maybe even a small cave to explore or a house on said tiny islands. Variety is the key here.

The problem with water routes is that sometimes they're too fucking wide with nothing but water as far as you can see, no reference point, so you get lost as fuck.

Also, THE SAME POKÉMON ALL OVER THEM.

They can fix this by adding more variety, better distinction between the water routes like differently colored water (sometimes more green, more blue, darker, lighter), add a couple towns like Pacifidlog, maybe a platform/research base of some sort, areas with waves that you have to navigate around (not that current/rapid bullshit). A wrecked ship like New Mauvile but better, an underwater cave system with passages that take you to the other side of the region, etc

Also, an underwater city would be fucking AWESOME.
