The thing about fighting the E4 straight after the Kalos League would pretty much confirm an Ash loss because it would be extremely rushed because of SM taking place.

Let Ash win the Kalos League which gives him an opportunity at the Champions League/E4, but instead of going straight there he does what Tyson did after Hoenn, him going to train/challenge more Leagues to get stronger before entering.

That way the Pokemon Series has an automatic ending arc for Ash when they decide to retire him. Have him enter the E4/Champions League and have it be where he becomes champion or something and that spells the end for his saga.
