what happend to the sales between gen 1 to gen 3?

I wonder how the gens would stack up when compared to the number of each game's system which had been sold.

As in, what percentage of DS users owned Platinum? Might be a decent way to normalize the data.

On topic:
Some of it was there just being fewer users at that time. A lot of it was the hype dying down, and people leaving the series at gen 3 when you couldn't transfer up your "bros".

Pokemon was supposed to end at Generation II.

However, Satoshi Tajiri saw all the money they were making and decided to ultimately sell out. They rebooted the franchise with Generation III and laid down the foundation for future titles to rehash in a timely manner. A mold with which to fill. A lot of people involved with Generation I and II either left or were not prepared for the continuation.

It's not a video game anymore. It's just a pop culture zeitgeist that refuses to die.

For today episodes of things that only happen in the pokemon fandom, people really believe that this doesn't count as a success. Pokemon still sells like hotcakes, period.
And GEN VI is proably the most successful, since the 3DS is nowhere as popular as the various gameboys and the DS

It might seem like sales dropped off a lot, and they did, but Ruby and Sapphire were still the best selling GBA games. It's kind of like the transition from the Wii to the Wii U. Everyone wanted to have a Game Boy because it was a new thing that was cool to have. When Nintendo started making new and improved handhelds casuals were satisfied with their older models and eventually stopped using them altogether.

Pokémon as a fad died after Johto, what we were left with was the true fans, rather than just the kids who were playing along with the crowd.

It is impossible to overstate how popular Pokémon was during Gens I and II. I got in on the ground floor on Gen I UK launch day and I'd still say Gen II is what I have the most nostalgia for because of how fucking on fire the franchise was.
