The anime is not necessarily correct. They change pronunciations just because they can.

OP's pronunciation makes more sense because of the pun in the name. Otherwise the name is completely meaningless.

>>26419146

It's a name. That makes no fucking sense. There is no word in the English language where "Y" is pronounced as "why", unless it is a separate letter in the word (such as attached via hyphen).

If it was "why-vel-tal" with the same spelling, it'd be "Y-Veltal".

Also, for names that are the same between English and Japanese, you can just look at the Japanese pronunciations (sometimes with the need to remove some vowels).
>>
>>26419162
>Grow-don
>Pal-Key-Ah

Those ones are actually right, tho.

>>26419162

>Ark-eus

It's officially "arse-ee-us". Yes, they changed it in the anime, but that was AFTER they said it correctly and because some autistic retards such as yourself complained about "arse" in the name. Plus that's how it is in Japanese too.

>Ex-urn-eee-us

Another retard who can't pronounce an "X" in the English language. It essentially sounds like a "Z".

It's "zern-ee-us".

I corrected Yveltal earlier. Granted, you didn't know it was me, but I didn't think I needed to do it again. >>26419133

As for Zygarde, I go by the Japanese pronunciation, though I usually say "zai-guard" because it's easier to say.

It's not "obviously" nor "clearly" Germanic, but it's likely that's what they were going for. You have to remember, though, that the names which are the same in Japanese existed in Japanese first, and so the romanisations aren't necessarily entirely accurate.
>>
For the longest time, I had mentally switched the second "a" and the first "e" in Salamence and pronounced it it "Sal-eh-man-ss" instead of "Sal-ah-men-ss"
>>

It's ironic that your English is a fucking disaster, but I assume what you're trying to say is that it should be "skep-tile", without the "l" part being separated out as a separate syllable.

That being said, I agree with "arse-ee-us", but then again, they pronounced it like that in its first anime appearance, and that's how the Japanese pronounce it too.

I will forever and unironically call my beloved sceptile "Skep-tile". I read it like "reptile" as one anon wrote and I never heard his anime pronunciation until years after ruby/sapphire/emerald. I've obviously gotten the crossed looks when I say it but I acknowledge "correct" pronunciation. It's a text based game that's been translated from japanese, I think I'm justified in having an alternate pronunciafion, and I have yet to encounter someone autistic enough to ree me since most people have at least 1 name they pronounce differently.

Lad, I...
>>
>>26419845

You are retarded.

First of all, Suicune is "soo-ee-coon". You have to pronounce the "i" else you're literally ignoring part of the name just because you're a dumb, illiterate faggot.

Next, Arceus is indeed "arse-ee-us". The "official American pronunciation" thing is bullshit. They changed it, so technically both work, but since the name is exactly the same in Japanese, the Japanese pronunciation trumps the American one, especially since that was the original version.
Plus, I don't live in America, so fuck their "official pronunciations".

Finally, if you bothered to read any more of the thread, you'd see I explained Zygarde - the "ay" part comes from the Japanese name, and since it is a direct romanisation, it's impossible to say by just looking at the romanised name whether or not it actually has Germanic roots (or Nordic, or whatever - no one actually cares).

As for Sceptile... see above.

Oh, and you fell for so many trolls, faggot.

>>26419852

Except that makes no sense since the name originated in Japan, and therefore would more than likely not be a pun on an English word, though it is possible, but if it was intending to be "ark-ee-us", it would have been written/pronounced like that in Japanese. Except it never was because that's not what they intended.

>>26420343

What, you want to cry about how it makes just as much sense as the "official" pronunciation? You faggots can't just admit that you're wrong. Both pronunciations work just fine. "Official" means fucking nothing these days. Anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot and/or the newest of newfags.
>>
>>26419910

It's Sep-tile. You are saying it wrong. Stop making excuses just because your vocabulary sucks.
>>
>>26420354

>Arguing over completely subjective shit because the name pronunciation for mons as almost never ever been fucking consistent

I find it ironic and arguing over Arceus' name can be about as bad as talking about religion in general.

>Except that makes no sense since the name originated in Japan, and therefore would more than likely not be a pun on an English word, though it is possible, but if it was intending to be "ark-ee-us", it would have been written/pronounced like that in Japanese. Except it never was because that's not what they intended.

Japan also pronounces Genesect with a hard G even though it's obviously based on gene or genesis, so it's a soft G in English. It's not always the same.

>subjective

Arceus's name is debatable because of the inconsistent pronunciation, and being shared across languages. Most names are not. They have a clear, correct, official pronunciation and faggots like you are just being obstinate.
>>
>>26420488
Except all the official sources are also fucking inconsistent.

No they're not. Most names are entirely consistent. Not once in any fucking source was it pronounced "skep-tile." It's just a few inarticulate faggots being stubborn because they can't handle being wrong.

JAP: Jee-gah-roo-deh (said quickly)
ENG: Zee-GARD, technically speaking (I say "Zie-gard," though.)
The Japanese and English pronunciations are technically the same, but there exists no sound for "zee," in the Japanese language's syllable-based phonetic/writing systems. "Ji (jee)" is basically the best they can do, so to speak. As touched upon, the Japanese language used syllable as opposed to single letters, which can be confusing for English speakers who are stuck in the ways of their own language.

I know it's wrong but I say Rayquaza as ray-KA-za.

The quay shit sounds so dumb to me, especially after ray.

Also I talked to a friend the other day and he STILL pronounces it ratta-tatta after like 20 years.
