Gen 6 really does have the worst starter evo designs honestly. On the other hand I actually loved Gen 5's.

Nintendo needed a new mascot for new players. Old players have Charizard and Pikachu. Gardevoir and Lucario grabbed some fans in the later gens. Nintendo needed something new to go along side all the aging mascots. They put all their resources and focus groups to find what would have the most appeal. They learned that Naruto was still a thing. They also learned that no matter how good a design is unless it's so good some people think it should banned then nobody will care. So they created the most powerful pokemon they could make and made it appeal to the Naruto crowd. It's been a winner for them so far. They likely wont be able to pull it off again any time soon.

Zoroak was pushed so much early on. I think it was targeted at furries but they underestimated the staying power Lucario had. Furries just have too many options now and they are less likely to dump something they really like for something new that comes along. Zoroark also fails the "takes over competitive" check. I think they made the right choice by sticking with the mascot that has more appeal. Imagine if Zoroark was in their 20th anniversary ad. People would really be going "what the hell is that?" Zoroark fills an furry niche and they knew that is the most it would ever get.

Ninjas may be overdone to Hell and back, but they're still cool if you stop jerking off to how autistic Naruto fans are. Greninja's cool. All Kalos starters are cool. Chesnaught only gets shit from people who don't know what a fucking chestnut is. Delphox is a bit awkward and definitely has a shit load of wasted potential in terms of gameplay, but it's still a good design.

Only way to improve on it would be to get rid or some of the unnecessary lines and change the beige on its body to another shade of blue or even green or something. Or grey. Anything but that hideous fucking beige.

Greninja looks fucking retarded because the ingame model and the anime both are too lazy to actually make his tongue scarf look like it's coming out of his mouth and wrapping around. It just looks like completely separate solid pink scarf, and Greninja never fuckin opens his mouth so that they don't have to address this. Him and Delphox are two great concepts executed with the utmost laziness, completely ruining them just like GameFreak loves to do.
