This. Every single gen they try to spin the latest games as being reminiscent of Gen I as if Gen I was somehow a golden standard when the reality is that the idea was just something novel for kids at the time.

They especially tried to do this with Gen V, although in GF's defense Gen V WAS pretty great.

In gen 1 crits were very common because your crit chance could be modified by your speed stat.
In gen2/3 moves like slash have the move about +12% crit chance, representing one stage of crit raising. In later gens it's more like +6% crit chance for one stage of crit raising.
These days, they changed how much the stages raise crit chance by, it used to be something like 6>12>25>33>50, but now it's more like 6>12>50 and it caps out at 3 stages now too.

As for damage, in gen1 a crit would double your level for the purposes of calculating damage, effectively dealing x2 damage but not exactly. Gen 2-4 it was x2 damage flat, now it's x1.5 damage flat.

Well another neat and lesser-known thing about crits is that they ignore all stat changes. If your opponent is set up and has their defenses very buffed, a crit hits as if they hadn't buffed at all. It even hits through screens.

Don't forget that gen I ignored raised/lowered stats for crits.

So if they growled you down to -6, they defense curled up to +6 or you Swords Danced up to +6, it deals the same damage as if no stat changes occurred - kinda like if both you and your opponent had unaware.

I don't remember anything from gen V trying to be like gen 1 except some of the pokedex (which is the case in all gens) and the Magikarp salesman. I remember a ton of gen 1 parallel moments in gen 6 though
