Florida would be better. St. Augustine could be a hotbed for ghost Pokémon. Panama City Beach would have a good chunk of the tourism from other regions, with Orlando having the rest. The criminal team could be based in Talahassee (headed by our dear criminal governor). And we have really diverse wildlife, so there's the potential for a huge Pokedex. Manatees, panthers, dolphins, gators, snakes, etc. There could be a safari zone in the Everglades.
We also have the superior, not-shitty Disney park, Cape Canaveral, the Marianna Caves, a surprising amount of farmland, and hurricanes.

California is actually a pretty shitty state in comparison. Yeah, it's bigger, but bigger isn't always better. Also, half of the region would be fucking desert, and who wants that?

Alaska first, it's got everything. the natural scenery here is epic (xD I know) in scale and it's comfier than anywhere else will ever be. Plus we haven't had an ice-focused region yet, this could do wonders for the type with a currently weak roster and weak moves. Seeing gamefreak have to experiment with using small towns again instead of all the overhyped shitty cities we have nowadays would be interesting. The mountains / differences in elevation could work well with the more dynamic 3d environment we're going to see in SM onward.
