It lives, it dies, it lives again.

Made some headway on tiles. Shown is some stuff for abandoned houses, which feature lots of loot and rare encounters.

Tinkering with a month system and seasons. Each month is a week long. Stuff happens/appears only during that time, such as item filled painted eggs hidden about in April. There will be a few special shiny during holiday months, given by ncps behind mazes. They correspond with the holidays, so some christmas colored in december and such. The egg sprite match the holiday as well. These are not the same as the pokemon's normal shiny.

Anyone have any tips on planning routes? I always get stuck on figuring out how many routes to put between each town/city. How the routes look and if they flow well. I don't want to keep puttibf blocks in because it makes my game seem forced. Help. Me.

I'm doing mine kinda weird. So I make one route, about 50 by 50 square that connects two cities, but I have it branch out into optional areas with good loot, accessed by teleport in essentials so I don't mess up my main map. I can make those side routes sorta big then, sometimes looping back to their opening point. They are tougher and offer more mazes and puzzles. So a player can move from city to city easily using the main route but there's incentive to explore these as all the good stuff is stored in the side routes. Some side routes have hidden entrances too, so they may take awhile to find, adding to the mystery and exploration of the game.

I tried seeing if it was possible to hack Primals and Megas into XY, but then gave up when I realized I'd have to repoint all of the party icons. Fucking GameFreak, why couldn't you just put the new ones at the bottom?

On my phone so this is kinda outdated but up in the top right there's now a route thats in the thicket of trees. It connects to an area with a burned down house, which is a bit maze to fallen debris, and an abandoned rare Pokemon you can pick up. It's a bit of an early route so that Pokemon is a lifesaver at the upcoming gyms.

But you can see how the route is fairly straightforward if you need to get about fast. I could add a cave near the bottom later if I want, without affecting the map connections.

Because I haven't edited the notable ROM hacks page since like 2014. A few threads ago I asked for names regarding what hacks should be added/removed but nobody responded.

I mean Googling tells me the hack got discontinued in 2010 so I guess that's a shitty excuse, but I basically merged two competing pastebins together without looking at things to remove when I made that pastebin.

How would I go about using parts of the pokemon txt file to create obstacles?

My idea is to make obstacles not solved by hm but components of a Pokemon. Pokemon smaller than a certain size can fit into pipes and retrieve items or crawl though a hole and unlock a door. Heavy pokemon can press down buttons that open old stone temple doors. A calm natured pokemon is able to solve a puzzle, while a brave one may make a daunting guard let you pass. I want to utilize things often overlooked, such as height, weight, habitat, nature, type, color, and egg group. Basically the event would do a check to see if a party pokemon has that and then the event plays out.

Its really opened up the amount of puzzles and secret areas i can include, so its not just strength rocks and hedge mazes. I feel like I never open the pokedex aside from looking for pokemon locations, so it makes it more a part of the game. Some puzzles will show an image of 5 pokemon footprints and ask what those species have in common (color, type, horns, etc). Other puzzles might give hints based on a pokemons pokedex entry.

Just finished developing a system for In-Battle Evolution. A pokémon can level-up in a battle and evolve, learn new moves and continue on.

Requires the pokémon to:
-Have a high bond with the trainer and level up in battle
-Must meet all other requirements for evolution
-stone evos must be holding the required stone

This should make in-game battles a bit more interesting.

Flawless is kind of shitty, there's a hack of it called Bullshit Platinum that is better, but still not great. For some reason the creator thought it was a good idea to give every single trainer in the game a bunch of healing items, so all the battles take far too long and waste a lot of PP. If you want to try it there's usually a download link in the nuzlocke thread.

I figured out how to render irregularly sized animated tiles on the overworld map.

You simply have to build them as characters, set both stop and move animations off, and manually set every frame of the animation one after the other with a "wait" statement after each.

If you have a shadow generation script, toggle it off for the character and build invisible characters around this one to set passability

So i'm trying to play Pokémon Apex and this shit does even launch. How could i have fucked up simply extracting files? What did i do wrong?
I'm running Win8.1 with system locale set to japanese.

Two possibilities
a) The thing you got is simply no good. Either in general.
b) Something fucked up while you were downloading/extracting it.

For Option a, I'm no expert on Apex but here's things that could've gone wrong:
1) RPGMaker XP on which Essentials is built (upon which Apex is built) as I heard had some rare issues with Windows 8, so you could try the usual approach of "Run as administrator" and try out some compatibility run modes. (Between 7 and XP. Can't imagine anything older than that would get it working.)
2) Did you use Apex Launcher? It's still unfinished, so it could be that it's fucking up.

Option b is somewhat rarer than Option a in this day and age, but still can happen. In that case just re-do everything.


If none of that works, I'd recommend looking up your system's compatibility with RPG Maker XP, as I'm fairly certain that the "doesn't even launch" kind of issues can't be caused by essentials or Apex.

(Then again, I'm not an expert, so what do I know?)

Pokemon Essentials a premade project file for RPG Maker XP. There's a ton of built-in assets, but importing's as easy as dragging and dropping into the right folders. Making routes and events is a breeze too.

There are no hardware limitations, and Essentials documentation is readily available on the wiki.

Essentials has a bit of a stigma on /heg/ because of all the edgy fangames out, but regardless you're better off using Essentials then learning how to make a ROMhack.

I got into it just by looking at the code and seeing what I could do with it. I learned how to do things by copying other things in the code (I added the Fairy-type by looking at the type structure and editing everything that had to do with types, added new Pokémon similarly looking at the Pokémon data structure, etc.) If I don't know how to do something I ask someone else. I don't even know how to code, but everything that isn't related to the game engine itself I've been able to edit without that knowledge.

Also, that anon who told you to learn Essentials is full of shit, Essentials is a shit engine and you don't need to learn hex editing unless you want to do some major change to Gen 3 that hasn't been done before. Gen 1 and 2 have both been fully dissasembled and Gen 3 has so many fucking tools and resources that you could make a full game, with custom Pokémon, custom maps, custom trainers and scripts, and nab features other people have coded and made available like Mega Evolution and the Fairy-type without having to code shit.

The Essentials engine is trash, too, by the way. Every game I ran from it on my toaster lags like hell, unless the author of the hack took measures to optimize it like the Sage guys and seemingly Max from this thread.

Repitition. So likely they won't notice a secret the first time, but if there's others similar to it, they will fall into one eventually and then realize "wait, I've seen this shit earlier too" and backtrack to the others. I have birdhouses in my game. If you click on the birdhouse, you can use a flying pokemon to retrieve EV wings from the nest. Likely it'll be passed over a few times but eventually found by accident. Then there's other variants, like wells that contain items water pokemon can nab for you or small tunnels small pokemon can fit into. Let them learn that there's a system at play and then let them experiment.

That's pretty much how hidden items work in the canon games, suspiciously empty grass patches or single rocks hanging by themselves. Good idea.

Thinking about it, there actually aren't that many hacks with custom regions I've played with hidden items. I always check whenever there's a suspicious spot but like 80% of the time the hack just doesn't bother putting anything in. I always like the few hacks that do, though.

Similarly, a pretty common way is to put something obvious but inaccessible right at the entrance of the area. They'll note they should be able to get there, but there's no way immediately apparent to do so. As they explore the route or dungeon, they'll keep it in mind as marker that, if they haven't gotten to, means there's still more to explore until they find it. As long as they haven't been able to get to it, even if they think they've explored everywhere in the area, there's still obviously something they missed. You can do this with items, or another exit being visible from the entrance or exit that is inaccessible from right there. And then, along the path to getting that obvious thing, can be the branch to some other secret area. that wasn't as apparent as the first thing. But because they've been primed to watch out for every path, they'll want to go down it anyway. This can be done anywhere along a route or area, but having it right at the beginning or end helps emphasize it more.

Of course, nothing stops you from making super secret and totally non-obvious as something special for people who autistically explore every last inch anyway. Especially later on, once the above has taught people to mind their surroundings more.

I would recommend using vanilla RPG Maker XP, and just taking the tile sets from Essentials. You could also copy the map connections script if you need it. Essentials is used through RPG Maker XP, so it won't export to a Rom, but an .exe file. If you need it to run on Mac or Linux without WINE, you could use RPG Boss for your purposes.

let's say i wanna hack a gen 2 event like the gs ball event.
that event is programmed to be triggered by a mobile event related with the battle tower. so it's programmed as an event object, which means its script is specific to the place where it is programmed (in this case the goldenrod pokecenter). unlike something like the cerulean gym event, which is where the last team rocket member can be found (or not, depending on where you are in the game).
what do i need to do in order to turn the first into the second? i just want the goldenrod lady to give me the gs ball as soon as i enter the goldenrod poke center after i've caught ho-oh (i know where that flag is, i just don't know how to program it).

How's this for a starter town? I've tried to make a decent looking tileset for so long that I just don't know anymore. Having a hard time finding nice tree tiles, as I hate having the trees placed all symmetrically like in the games.

The top building is the lab, and the bottom building is supposed to be a school. Route 1 lies to the left.

Not sure if I should keep the road going to the right, but there'd be a dock that's accessible after defeating the E4.

On the idea of putting the guy who gives you a fishing pole in the dock, that could be a bad idea, unless the character's got some task near the dock that gives him reason to talk to the fishing pole guy. (You could always have two people give out fishing poles though.)

If you're not done with that yet, you could put the first encounter event if you plan any, on some tall grass near the dock for example.

But yeah, really nice looking map and I appreciate the variety in tree colours!

Not knowing much about hacking or essentials, I don't know how hard it would actually be, but would it be easiest to make an entirely new type that behaves as if it was the dual type and make the move that type? Essentially create a 19th type and make it only appear for that move.

If you want to make the move like Flying Press, just make it look like the primary type in terms of the UI, in Flying Press's case it's Flying, but make the actual type a new one that behaves as a type that has the two types the move is supposed to be overlapping. You then set up its type chart effectiveness based off of how those two types behave as mashup:

Trouble with this solution is nobody will get STAB on it because there are no 19th-type Pokemon. For gen 3 romhacks, you basically want to create the new type, but make Flying Press a Fighting-type move. Then you add a hook in the type chart-reading code that checks if the move in question is Flying Press and swaps the 19th type for it, in much the same way it already checks for Struggle and skips the type chart if it's found. Same principle for Freeze-Dry. No idea how to work Essentials.

Stuck here and BWSE crashes when I select the folder. It's not a .narc file extension though. I extracted it with NDS top system and Tinke and they both gave me the same file.

I also extracted the file and all I see is .bin, .RCMN, .RAMN.
Is it really this simple or are you messing with me?

The problem was my version on Tinke was 0.9, I needed 0.8.
I'm in and pokemon are chopped into a bunch of pieces. I'm guessing that's how they're animated. Would each image have its own set of animations meaning I can't just shove a generic cut up pokemon I make and I'm good to go?
I'm beginning to understand why I haven't seen any gen 6 mons in gen 5 games.

Yeah all of the Pokémon are animated from smaller pieces. I used to spend hours figuring out which to replace based on their animation.

I want to replace the Woobat line with the Noibat line, I assumed they would have similar animations. Already running into a problem. The ears are too large to fit, I'll have to find something else that's similar.

You have to import the static sprite separate from the broken down parts using the same palette.

Break down the sprites into the smaller parts from the original like pic related after mporting da sprite, you need to use "sync pal" for the rest of them

Ah, so they're not the same just cut up. I export the default, change it and then export the static, change it, export the back, change it and then import them 1 by 1 and press sync?
What happens with the larger differences pokemon? Like Noivern isn't going to fit with Swootbat? I take it I'll need to use something else and then fix the evolution using Rom changer or something.
