So, I was investigating New Mauville and the Sea Mauville...both of these facilities mysteriously shut down, or in case of the Sea Mauville sank...Officially New Mauville wasn't profitable, and Sea Mauville was attacked by Tentacruels and their strong acid attacks

My investigations lead me to Mauvilles gym leader Wattson. He was the man behind the construction of New Mauville. He didn't seem suspicious at first, but when I snuck into the ruins of New Mauville and found plans for a generator, I changed my view. The thing was capable of producing enough power to power the whole region, but it was never even turned on. Strange...

An old man, Mr Briney helped me to get to Sea Mauville. Looks like I can trust him, he's a bit senile, but other than that a nice guy. Told me the offical story isn't quite true....at least 386 workers died, trapped in the lower decks of the ship. They all drowned. Told me also that Wattson has something to do with it. Might be true. Sea Mauville was to be turned into a platform generating power through wind and tides, and the people of Hoenn liked the idea of an environment-friendly energy-source. As opposed to New Mauvilles old reactor.

I arrived at Sea Mauville. Old Briney gave me some diving equipment. Hopefully it works.

TLDR: Greater Mauville Holdings was researching how to sacrifice Pokemon and convert their lifeforce into usable energy. Wattson refused to put up with that horror, and caused the entire company to go under.

You can tell they wanted to do more with it with the layout but they ran out of time for the holiday season so they just left the first room which they already redesigned to be the start and end for purposes of easily getting out, opened one of the doors that would only open after flipping the switch, and cut the rest of the unfinished dungeon.

In the original R/S, I'm fairly sure Wattson does mention how he had wanted to expand Mauville greatly under a big project of his, but it had to be cancelled so he just spent his time pimping out his gym

Presumably then, in the Mega Timeline he had the exact same ambitions but through chance and multiverse bullshit he managed to get the funding he had wanted through the Greater Mauville Holdings company (and Devon? Project AZOTH?). Basically he had always had ambitions to turn Mauville into Mallville, he just didn't have the means to do so in the RSE timeline

I really hope we get more to this story in SM
Like the ceo of Mauville secured his assets before the company went under and moved onto Alola to continue his research there
