The Pokemon variety, game speed, and plot were at their lowest point, Platinum fixed a lot of things but D/P are commonly regarded as borderline unplayable.

I admit I'm a "Unovabortion" but at this point I do wish Gen 5 could be discussed without these polarizing opinions.

Admittedly though I only care for the Pokemon and music. You think the region and story was shit, fine. But Gen 5's Pokemon were never that bad and the music was nice.

Was Gen 5's dex really that bad? I mean, I can compromise and say it did have the weirdest designs in the series, but it also had some of the best, and for me the goods outweigh the bads. But if you believe good <bad, tell me what's wrong with the likes of say, Hydreigon, Haxorus, Braviary, Excadrill, Volcarona, Galvantula, Mienshao, Krookodile, etc?
If they were injected into earlier Gens, would they be singled out as aesthetically unappealing?

I think it's because they came out right after Platinum.

Sinnoh and Unova are the two most polar opposite regions we have. Their design philosophies are totally different. They did totally opposite things with the Pokedex. Their stories are opposites, their characters are different styles, the Pokemon designs are totally different.

I figure GF were trying to avoid another D/P, and followed a totally different direction to get that. However, a lot of people adore Platinum, so B/W ended up swinging too far in the opposite direction for a lot of people.

If X/Y were after Platinum, and Black/White after them, I feel like they would have been universally praised. It was an issue of timing, and B/W being just a bit too experimental for when they came out.

Because it's the game that tried to be different. It leaned slightly towards the traditional JRPG style instead of continuing the simple and straightforward conventions we were used to in pokemon games. Especially coming after HGSS, one of the biggest examples of that simple straightforward nature of pokemon games.

Everything else is generally nitpicking. If someone says the designs sucked, and they can't pick out 6 designs they like from 156, they're full of a shit.

The linearity issue of the games are way overblown too, all pokemon games have been linear to some extent.

The casualization also wasn't nearly as big of an issue as it was in Gen 6 because you could ignore most of the changes made in Gen 5.

People just don't like dialogue, they wanna turn off their brains and go catch/battle some mons. They wanna explore where they want when they want. If something is preventing them from doing that right away, they get irritated and frustrated and stop playing.

Black and White were the most ambitious games
It was almost like an experimental generation, and that lead to a lot of beautiful moments
For example,

>They introduced 150 original pokemon, americanized versions of the original pokemon is some cases. That was a major feat.

Overall, gen V strayed away from the status quo and it did yield some shitty aspects, but it also produced some really great ones.

How about you not spout hyperbole. B/W is the Metroid Fusion of Pokemon. I can understand why people wouldn't care for it: the region lock means you have to wait until post game to get to all of your old favorites, story has never been the point of Pokemon games, and those who didn't particularly care for the design philosophies of Hoenn and Sinnoh are going to find little to like in the roster.

However, it's those same polarizing aspects that jump the game into the upper echelons of the franchise for some. The region lock when combined with the expansive roster brought in as well as the lack of out and out Shitmons encouraged players to experiment with the new species rather than just fall back on old favorites and there's plenty to like type and statwise, though I will admit some Pokemon have evolutions far too late. The story had this really self-aware feel to it, an understanding of the world that had been built up for the decade and change prior and honestly felt closer to a plot we'd only get in the mangas and was sufficiently engaging and at times powerful. The region followed the same level of thought, considering the usual clockwise trek around the region and trimming the fat while still offering a lot to see and do accompanied by a very good OST. The designs are a sticking point with many but in each you can really see the care and inspiration put into all of them that hearken back to the original 150 but still stand up on their own merits.

TL;DR: It's not the worst. It just went in a different direction.
