Sure, everyone complain about a shell-otter turning into a shell-otter/sea lion. No one complain about a lily pad-frog turning into a lily pad-pineapple-duck.

Don't know what lotad is supposed to be since it has six legs but the others are definitely japanese kappa which I'm pretty sure are inspired by platypus. And I don't think it's a pineapple, it's actually blue agave. When it's prepared the heart used for making tequila resembles a pineapple. Ties into the mexican theme better and the shiny form is even blue. This is my own theory though never seen anyone else mention the blue agave connection.
