Yeah, it's...Yamanba is terrifying. Ganguro is like, kind of oranges with thick white makeup and I think Gyaru is what it's called if you're just Ganguro light? Like deep tan, blonde hair? Yamanba though, is fucking hardcore. Black face paint (sometimes destructive tans) with white accents and crazy hair. Jynx is what a middle aged Japanese guy making video game monsters probably thought a Ganguro/yamanba was in the early 90s. It was a particularly new thing then and even 20 something year olds would've had some trouble understanding it as anything but, "Black face, blonde hair, and gaudy clothes. Got it."

Ganguro means "Black Faced Girl", but it and Yamanba are probably based more heavily on Japanese folklore about Oni than anything. I've heard it started as a way for girls to make themselves seem less attractive during a period of sexual issues for Japan, and ultimately it just became chic. But Ganguro doesn't have a solid beginning point or origin that I'm aware of.
Though if it had anything to do with anti-sexuality it REALLY failed at that considering how big a fetish Gyaru is now.

On a thematic scale, jumbogamemon, and execution-wise, Mugendramon/Machinedramon But yeah, although the owl assasin does kind of look like Shurimon or whatever (mostly them both being plant-themed assassins wearing shrouds, though, and not individual design cues), Shurimon doesn't look that much like the typical digimon, and the same could be said for a decent number of 02 digimon. I could totally see Halsemon being a pokemon more than I could, say, Blaziken if they were drawn in the same artstyle. The only Pokemon that actually look like digimon are lileep/cradilly and maaaybe Hoopa Unbound, if you really stretched it; if saw this on a Wikimon update, I'd definitely be weided out by how much it looked like a pokemon. Quite a few pokemon look like Spectrobes (Emboar, for example), but given how random Spectrobes designs can be all that really means is that it's stout, mean-looking and is covered in random-ass swirly patterns.

The water starter will ook really good in tandem with the region (Sorta looks like tito from rocketpower, amirite), and would honestly be one of the best pokemon designs out of the thousand or so we'll have. I love the other starters, but in terms of design congruity and thematic execution, it'd beat just about all of the existing ones by miles.
Which makes me confused as to why the Jaguar is so shit.
Owl is cool, but not as interesting or distinct-looking the similarly-themed Greninja from last Gen, who will ultimately overshadow it when all is said and done.

The vast majority of pokemon have mediocre designs but have the kinds of designs that will appeal to large swaths of specific people regardless (Braviary, Lililigant, etc.). The problem with the design is that although it's amazing by both pokemon and non-pokemon standards just in the way the design comes together and the originality of the theme, I'm not sure if it will have all that many people swooning over it in the states. In japan where the creepy clown trope isn't that strong due to clowns relative non-existance period, I don't think it'll be a problem, and the same people who chose chespin last gen will chose it this time around. Again, I think it's also important to note that the big cheesy grin is probably not trying to evoke just clowns, but stereotypes of native hawaiians as well.

Didn't know the pokedex entries were out, but my guess is that they would make the final evo out to be an all-around stuntman representative of the circus as a whole, given how it incorporates designs from both clowns and strongmen (although in retrospect that is literally colculdurr, albeit done in a much less thrown-together way)
