Their typings are kinda bland, otherwise I think they're easily among the best looking starters in the series. Design-wise they complement each other really well too.

Same. Gen V in general felt like one of the most artistically inspired gens in terms of design to me.

I think the dislike for the starters partially stems from the fact that all three of them were so varied in appearance that most people would typically love one starter and hate the other two. You had a round bipedal fire boar, an elegant snake lord and a quadruped samurai sealion that were all derived from very distinct cultural motifs; any of the other starter trios seem a lot more down-to-earth and more "basic" in comparison so the average person could digest them more easily.

Gen V took a big risk with its aesthetics, and for me personally that risk definitely paid off.

Also, am I the only one who noticed Gen V shitposting become much more prominent after the Sun/MOON reveal? I don't remember it being nearly this bad during the quiet times. Heck, we even had some great Snek threads going, and Snivy/Fennekin shipping in the Pmd threads was one of the more popular ships. Do those still happen?

I wasn't here during the "quiet periods" but I did frequent /vp/ during the B/W, B2/W2 and X/Y hype periods, and the praise for Gen V was near-universal then. The starters themselves were a little more divisive for some odd reason but even they weren't hated as much as they are now.

I think it's just /vp/ going the way of all other 4chan boards in which the contrarianism's finally kicking in.

The variety that Gen 5 offered really fits with its region. Unova, the first non-Japanese region, was based on America, one of, if not the most diverse country in terms of people and culture. Gen 5 had the first first non-Asian characters, and from a Pokemon stand point, a huge variety of designs and themes.

I don't hate them.....It's just that snivy is the only one I like since it's evos mostly looks very similar when they evolve unlike oshawott and to an extent emboar.

I fucking hate these starters. Emboar would have looked cool if the went for a regular 4 legged boar, not some bars fuck. Fire tusks/mane would be cool af. Serperior has too many swirled and random shit tacked on but I like it otherwise. Samurott would be the best out of the three if his back legs were a bit fucking longer. I like the way he uses his arm swords but you never get to fucking see it. He just stands there on all fours and when he does use them he should fall over from being top heavy. Samurai the should look like he's fighting, not posing. So basically:
