Roommate found a shiny Golbat in SS long before I ever found a wild shiny. He was planning on killing it before I convinced him to catch it, didn't understand how rare it was at the time.

My first wild shiny wasn't until White 2. Found several while playing through Y, however.

I've played since fucking yellow and have only encountered 1 shiny and it was a Sneasel. ....and I somehow lost it. It's like it just disappeared.

Same here, played since gen 2 and have played almost every mainline Pokemon game yet never encountered a wild shiny.

I've only encountered one shiny in the wild, and that was a shiny wooper in Soul Silver. And I've gotten the Shiny Charm in Y, and I've still not found another wild shiny in the like five or six years since that wooper.

Since Crystal, I've encountered a shiny (Mareep, during my first ever playthrough of Silver in 2001) and I got Pokerus 3 times (in different games).

Yes. It's to do with a hidden value of a Pokemon called a "personality value" (which also determines gender and I forget what else). If that lines up a certain way with your ID/SID, it's shiny.
The odds depend on the game and some other factors. Generally speaking, in gen 6, the odds of finding a shiny are 1/4096.

I've ran into a couple. Caught some. Lost some. Here's my first that I know of. At least memorable, if not useful.

Didn't get any until this gen. Managed to catch a remoraid while randomly fishing and a geodude in a horde encounter that nearly died to the other geodudes magnitudes. Then I got my shiny charm and bred an aegislash and an aggron. Keep trying.

Go fucking fish chain in XY or ORAS and stop whining.
