Would people have been happy with Oshawott if Gamefreak just said "it was SUPPOSED to look like a clown!"? I have personal doubts that there is, but there's got to be a way to make something based on the idea of a circus performer or clown and not have it look stupid, and even if there isn't, it's okay to like it even if such a design is destined to look stupid because looking like a silly clown is a perfectly valid reason for liking a pokemon, but it really shouldn't be that strange or ridiculous that people don't like it.

I think it's a bad design it is blobby. The difference is certainly because different people designed them, but you can really tell how Rowlet and Litten's anatomies are different than Popplio's. The snout looks even worse in motion imo than the still where it still looks like it could be one part of the wole head, whereas in its model in-game it looks even more like two pieces of clay mooshed together. I think the rounded and putty like design was intended to going along with its silly clown-ish feel but that doesn't mean I think it's good inherently because it can be interpreted to match thematically. I'm also not saying other starters don't do that (coincidentally, Oshawott has that feel as well, off the top of my head). And as with the whole "it's a clown seal thing" I don't think that was brilliantly executed even If I acknowledge that the idea is creative. Not everyone has to like every Pokemon, i nfact most Pokemon are probably made to appeal to certain people. I think it's more important that every Pokemon appeals to someone than for every Pokemon to appeal to everyone.

I believe that designs with more meat to them are objectively better than ones composed of basic shapes mashed together. Has nothing to do with what a Pokemon "should" look like or anything like that. It's just obviously more challenging and interesting to look it when designs aren't like that. That doesn't mean the design is a lost cause or that nobody is allowed to or even shouldn't like it. I think Scraggy's concept is mind blowingly creative and it's one of my favorite pokemon, but I think it suffers from a similar problem for example. Pokemon's designs are a whole package and not just one aspect so I suppose you're correct in that I don't think because one part of its design is not well done on an objective level that it means the whole thing isn't because beyond shape theory and stuff like that, su h as the idea behind a Pokemon and it's other motifs, are certainly purely subjective, even if the leaning is clearly one way or the other (such as it being a clown is not "objectively" bad even though most people probably won't like clowns).

agreed. this is the first generation where i think that all 3 starters are actually really well designed. some gens had one stinker in the mix (I, III), some had two (II, IV, VI), and one did not have any good ones at all (V). didn't expect that from GF at this point, but massive kudos to them.
