Gen 1 = FF6
Gen 2 = FFV
Gen 3 = FFVII
Gen 4 = FFIV
Gen 5 = FFX
Gen 6 = FF3

Bonus:
Platinum= FFIV Complete
HG/SS = FFIX
ORAS = FFVIII

You mean highly underrated and often dismissed by morons who somehow didn't understand the fairly simple character development within?

Truth, still my favorite Final Fantasy.

If anything, the gens are closer to:

Gen 1 - FF I
Gen 2 - FF III
Gen 3 - FF IV
Gen 4 - FF VI
Gen 5 - FF VII
Gen 6 - FF V
Gen 7 - FF VIII (I hope.)

In short, gen 1 was the baseline, gen 2 was a good entry but not amazing, gen 3 was one of the best but outdated until the 3D remake, gen 4 is overrated but decent, gen 5 is extremely overrated by a vocal minority, gen 6 was decent but ultimately not very memorable, and gen 7 is promising to be the crowning achievement of the series.

Lets just hope they avoid going the way of FFXIII.
