What's going on?
>I'm playing through pokemon black, taking inputs from you, /vp/.
>You'll decide whom I catch, what pokemon are in my party, what I name pokemon, etc.

RULES
>one pokemon caught per route (barring dubs gets to capture a specific mon later)
>all uniques and legendaries must be caught. Legendaries must be boxed and cannot be used or released
>All decisions will be decided via GETS, and a single GET will decide a single choice(for example, calling to catch X, but you can't also name it)
>Dubs can enact temporary rule changes(lasting the day/the thread)
>trips can force pokemon releases
>Quads can force permanent rule changes, within reason
>We don't talk about quints...except that quints changes can only happen once.
>Higher GETS can also override a lower GET(a dub can override a single GET for example)
>invalid GETs will be discarded

what made game freak think it was a good idea to make us battle the rival every single town? this is I think the fourth time I've battled cheren and I've battled bianca 3 or 4 times as well.

Black and white give out very little exp on random encounters. you get a bit more fighting the rivals each time than you would grinding out on 10 or so wild pokemon.

but when you encounter the tard duo more than random trainers, it makes the world feel empty, and it doesn't give you a sense of progression, since you're just beating the same two trainers over and over.

in previous games, the rivals felt like a challenge, and beating them was evidence you were improving as a trainer, but so were they. cheren and bianca, meanwhile, are basically right next to you the whole time, hounding you and/or forcing you to do shit.

I mean, in an earlier city, upon arriving, cheren forced me to follow him 10 steps forward just to show me the pokemon center...when I'd been to several towns already, and already been shown pokemon centers by the professor!

I think you are over thinking it. Besides, I actually like having them involved in the story. I was tired of "rivals" being so... uninvolved. The games does a great job adding context over these rivals and the "demons" they themselves are facing.

That said, it slowly goes away as you get further. So don't sweat it.

The routes, cities and towns were too tiny to explore, you can literally found what to do in less that 13 minutes. Pokémon is not a Zelda or a Metroid game. Pokémon is not about exploration nor adventure, it's about catching monsters and make them fight.

I agree with you that the handholding in B/W is really fucking stupid and you can't stop in any town without someone telling you what to do or helping you in some way.
Doesn't stop Gen 5 from being my favorite, saving all old Pokémon for postgame was a great move on their part and sadly they won't do it again.
I also like that even if your friends interrupt you almost every step you take, watching their development and interactions with the other characters is pretty nice, just wish it was handled better.

While it's bad in a handholding sense, I appreciate that they involved your "childhood friends" and the professor in the games more often. It made more sense that your friends would constantly tag along and help you out rather than showing up 2-3 times in the game and challenging you before fucking off. BW2 probably handled it better in some ways but it's nice that it's there (XY though... Not so much)
