People said this shit about battles before XY were announced. We now have 1,008 Pokémon models as of ORAS, not counting overworld models and shinies.

It's understandable why 721 walking animations would seem like a daunting task, but that's really not the case. For one, there's no need to make 721 of them. Many Pokémon with similar body configurations share a compatible skeleton, meaning that, for example, both Espeon and Umbreon could use the very same animation. Yes, I know that if EVERYTHING with compatible skeletons used the same animation, it would take away from each of their personalities, which gets me to my next point.

It's really not that hard to make a short, looping walk animation. No, seriously. It comes down to workflow, a professional animator can whip one out in 5 minutes. Also, do consider the work they put into XY. There are at least three animations for each Pokémon in-battle (idle, physical attack, special attack, often a status move but sometimes it's bundled with the special animation), not to mention the huge piece of work that is the Pokémon Amie. So now that all that work is already done, you just need to make those for 80 or so Pokémon native to the Alola region, a fraction of that time could very well be put into walk animations.

Third, the hardware limits. I agree, lag is pretty darn bad. However, the Pokémon models don't actually have as many polygons as you guys seem to think. It's a misconception created by a thing called "smoothing", which essentially calculates extra polygons for the models so they appear smoother instead of a jarring mess of blocks. The thing with smoothing is, it can be reduced pretty quite easily. So if they wanted to, the Pokémon in the overworld would have less visible polygons, and thus would require less resources on the game side.

Of course, with all this in consideration, it's really a stupendous wonder why the fuck GF doesn't have following Pokémon, ridable Pokémon and Pokémon you can surf on (I mean using the actual model of the Pokémon for surfing, like with Lapras, Wailmer, Kyogre and Sharpedo).
