In gen4 all starters ended up strong against both other starters. Fire/Fight strong against grass and steel, grass/ground strong against water and fire, water by itself strong against ground and fire. The difference with 4 is end evolutions did away with the triangle, but if the seal ends up water/ice, both starters will be strong against grass/flying, and the owl won't get any strength against the rest.

Don't mean to single you out, you were just the first post I saw when this thought came to mind.

We didn't get our first starter lineup that all had secondary typings until Gen4 with Grass/Ground, Water/Steel, Fire/Fighting. I don't think it's safe to assume that every trio we get is gonna have to abide by some balancing act with their secondaries. While it might seem like that's the only "fair" way to do it, that hasn't always been the case.
personally, i hope it doesn't always work out that way. It would get too restricting as to what they could make the starters be

Popplio: water > water > water/fairy

fire < water poison > fairy
psychic > poison
grass > water

Fire is going to end up being the most powerful of the three in terms of typing with poison as secondary. So probably things will be balanced with abilities. Fire/dark is still viable but it will prbly fuck up the triangles.

Based on certain past starter trends, there are a few things that we can extrapolate for the starters moving forward.


Every single plant pokemon has ended up being based on a prehistoric animal by the third stage or can be extrapolated to be based on a prehistoric animal as is the case with Serperior. You can argue till you're blue in the face that it can or cannot be true, but the fact of the matter is that starters from gens 1-4, and gen 6 all have prehistoric influences in its final stage for the grass starter.

With Rowlet having mention of kicks, this suggests a kicking-based bird in the future. Hypothetically, a cassowary or secretary bird might be down the line, with a final stage based on a Phorousracos. If Rowlet stays an owl, then we can assume that it's final evo will be based on Ornimegalonyx.

Now for Litten.
It's a tiger. Look up the face of a tiger and notice the facial tufts and the pattern on Litten's forehead. Eerily similar to a tiger, and one would expect a tiger cub to look similar to Litten in the pokeuniverse. Also note the tail. The tail looks very much like a fuse or a wick, , and when combined with the fact that it is covered in oil to make fireball furballs, Litten is basically going to end up covered in fire. Another thing to keep in mind that no fire type has ever been a pure quadruped. Even Quilava and Typhlosion have bipedal capabilities. Litten's evolution will in all likelihood be some kind of bipedal tiger. Whether the oil leads to a poison typing or it's a dark type will have to be seen later on.

Popplio is pretty easy to see where it's going. Most people have caught onto the clown aspect of its design, but few people have noticed the naming scheme. It's very Italian in nature and combined with the clown design, Popplio looks very similar to the tragic clown motif. In my personal opinion, Popplio is going to take that all the way to its evolution where it's going to be a take on Pagliacci.
