I expected more. The real reason for this was that they were limited by a 8 MB cartridge. There's no story-related or canon reason for there being nothing in Kanto. In the modern remakes, they could have added a lot more to Kanto and I honestly believe they should have.

This was something I liked in the originals. In RBY, Pokemon seemed to be as new to the people of the Pokemon world as they were to us experiencing the game for the first time.
In GS, nobody had seen Pokemon eggs before. Baby Pokemon had never been seen before, and even the Steel-type had just been discovered sometime between the three years of RBY and GS.
I really did like that. I dislike how they forgot about that and just swept it under the rug in the newer games. I don't even recall them mentioning anything similar for the new Fairy type... it seems like they just retconned it to being always what it was.

You recall wrong. Just like how Sycamore has the player's group trying to research Mega Evolution, he has two other kids researching Fairy Type pokemon. You encounter them right before talking to Sycamore for the first time and they explain that Fairy Type was just discovered recently and that it's had a huge impact on Pokemon battles, which is why Sycamore wants them to research it.

As for the rest, pokemon were already part of the daily lives of people in the old games. Just some aspects of them and some species were a mystery. That's still the same now.

At least the Elite 4 didn't all have 4 Pokemon
