Gen V was perfect. Well, almost. BW Unova was a little too linear.

To be honest, it makes perfect sense that newer games win over past ones, as they are typically better and improved in many if not all aspects. Gen 6 was an unlucky flop that decreased in popularity once the hype was over, so it's logical that the win falls back on the generation that came right before it; Gen 5. If SM turns out to be great games, I'm sure they'll take the win from that point on until another set of better games takes the prize, and so on.

Gens 4 and 5 are objectively the best though.

I personally voted Gen 4 because of HG/SS. HG/SS alongside Platinum is EASILY the strongest lineup Pokémon has ever had in terms of pure quality and content.

I will also give honorable mention to B2/W2, those games had an incredible amount of content, and managed to please both fans of B/W, and people who disliked B/W. B2/W2 still has one of the strongest single-player experiences in the franchise, with objectively the best Regional Dex.

Every other Gen has very significant things that drag them down in ways that simply make them incomparable to Gen 4 and 5's overall quality.

No nostalgia or anything either, been playing since Red version mate. I would even say that to consider the other gens better, especially 1 or 3, would be due to heavy nostalgia. The people who voted Gen 2 are stupider though, because the remakes were the same games + more shit, and that doesn't even include the Sinnoh side of Gen 4...

Just Hoenn is a bit of a mess. Too similar to Kanto look at the first town where you can't fight the gym leader and then go to a forest named after that exact town and then fight a rock gym leader with a Geodude. It's got really god Pokemon I'm not going to lie, but getting them is so late on the game unfortunately. The story is dumb and only gets worse the more we look at it compared to organized crime. It's the start of non dangerous grunts too (although Galatic takes the cake, yes they blow stuff up but you literally chase a guy down until it to tired and just follows him for awhile) +Sinnoh's problems of too many HM's loved the bikes though that's something

The poll asked for my favourite gen, not favourite games, so I voted for the gen that introduced the most and the best gameplay improvements: Gen III.
Items, abilities and manageable EVs are just too pivotal.
It also introduced the first new form of battling, Doubles, and Gamefreak finally settled on an IV/EV system that was used pretty much unaltered for all subsequent games.

These mechanics persist as the generation's legacy, regardless of how shitty the plot/region/pokemon selection/etc in the games are.

Awful Regional dispersement (the Pokémon themselves are pretty good, one of Gen 3's strongest points. However the variety of the Routes, and where the Pokémon were available was just atrocious.

I feel like the music was incredibly grating, but this is admittedly a very personal opinion.

The Region was polarizing. The 50% water/land thing was very poetic and good on paper, but there is quite literally 6 back-to-back water Routes in Hoenn, three of which were plagued with uncontrollable water currents, making it an undeniable and repetitive chore to get through.

Gen 3 also kickstarted the "evil team wants world domination, using Box Legendary(tm)! Save the day!" story that has been re-used ever since, and only really twisted upon in Gen 5.

Was also the first and only time the games weren't backwards compatible, alienating older fans. Such fans were also put off with the other merchandise. See the trading cards were becoming too plentiful, and the anime's quality nosedived, resulting in the original writers and voice actors bailing, leaving behind a shell of its past self.

Was also the first games to, and the game most guilty of, removing established features in the game, to replace them with new gimmicks. Some of these changes were so ridiculous (day/night) that they returned the very next Gen.

To sell the spin off games, and the Genwun remakes, the games intentionally left out a plethora of fan favorite Pokémon, including the Eevee line. There was literally no way to get these Pokémon for a long time, and Nintendo of America had to drop the "Gotta' Catch 'Em All!" slogan due to this. (They started using it again in Gen 6)
