It is possible, X and Y had a LOT of throwbacks to Gen 1 and with that in mind Sun and Moon can easily have a LOT of throwbacks to Gen 2, maybe even having Kalos in the post game as a throwback to Kanto being in Gen 2's post game. We know they aren't going to have the Zygarde forms be anime exclusive (anyone that actually thinks they'll make them anime exclusive is clearly an idiot) and having a Z Episode would make the most sense in order to introduce them.

It wouldn't be the worst thing ever. Have Gen 7 close the book that Gen 6 started. Make Gens 6 and 7 connected the way 1 and 2 were.

The only real issue comes with Zygarde and the souvenir. Zygarde is the protector of Kalos that shows up when the ecosystem is out of whack. Yet, if the souvenir was a clue, it's from a region far from kalos.

How does Sun and Moon's region fit in with the previous gen/Kali's without feeling shoehorned?

A popular fan-theory is that SM's region will have a Moondial that's similar to Kalos' Sundial (an NPC in Anistar even talks about such moondials existing), and since the dials are made of pink diamonds and thus making an obvious link to Diancie, it could be that the golden rings on it are linked to Hoopa and therefore could create a portal between the two regions. Far-fetched yes, but if SM's region truly is a land far, far away, the only other connection would be "Zygarde has deus ex machina underground tunnels that takes like 2 seconds for it to go through".

Yeah, far fetched but not terrible. I don't even need Hoopa to be the reason for the "quick travel." Come up with shitty lore that links the moon and sun dials and make them, idfk, star gates or some shit.
