At first, it was character growth. He naturally became more competent and experienced with time. Then, they wanted to do a soft reboot, trying to set him back to his starting state of an unexperienced goofball. This really pissed dedicated fans off and killed ratings, so they whiplashed too hard in the opposite direction and made him full on mary sue tier.
