Gen 1 and 2 look far worse than 3+ due to them being for GBC. Gen 1 was a complete clusterfuck gameplay-wise with trapping moves and psychic types, gen 2 wasn't much better either with league champ highest poke being lvl 50. Gen 3's only flaw was that the phys/special split wasn't done yet, making gen 4 feel like such an amazing improvement with the 3d overworld, persistent wifi capabilities with no addons and a plethora of pokemon becoming viable now that their STAB isn't invalidated by their stats.

I mean, people who played all gens have a better understanding of what was a good game when each game was released, but kids whose first portable was a DS doesn't have this same percetion, since the pokemon they know have a lot of colors, a 3d world and a bunch of different pokemons which would lead them to believe that either 4 or 5 were the best games.
