I mean a region that's entirely broken up into islands. Think of it like The Wind Waker, or the Orange Islands saga.

The real question is how IGN would feel

The only real issue would be having to constantly keep a Pokemon that knows Surf on you.

I think there should be multiple means of getting from the different islands before you know Fly. One of them could simply be a paid speedboat service that can take you to most islands within a certain distance.

However, you should be able to manually surf on your Pokemon's back if you want to. Different Pokemon could perhaps work differently on the ocean. Wailord could be slower, but could be able to deep sea dive without knowing a HM. Sharpedo could be lightning fast, but could also have poor handling. The only way to find secret islands is to manually surf, giving the game rewarding feeling with lots of secrets to find.

Damn, I really hope Game Freak goes down this route.

I kind of loved navigating the Sevii Islands, so I'd be down for this.

Here's an idea: Eventually, give the player their own motorboat to boat around in the open sea. In the more open areas of the sea there can be tons of little, secret Islands and grottos. So I guess I want Wind Waker with Pokemon.

I actually ran an idea past a friend not to long ago about multiplayer pokemon game.
Because an MMO is a terrible idea.
So what if the island, or little zoned areas show other players that are in that area.
Each island could be a sort of private room. Picture the multiplayer in monsterhunter.
Something like that.

They'd have to work really hard to make it not shit. Keep long featureless water routes to an absolute minimum. Dive everywhere. Make it so you can circumnavigate the islands and find all kinds of secrets along the shores. Just make it exploration based as possible.
