You barely need to pay attention in battles, but you do have to upgrade your Pokemon.
When a Pokemon has a special attack charged, you'll have to tap it, but that's all there is.
It says auto at the top, but that's actually disabled, I'm guessing it does the specials for you

That's because you're the player character, that said in the PR videos they use an array of emotions and expressions for the player.
Meanwhile every NPC and player model in this game looks flat as a board in all areas while even NPCs in X and Y showed a slew of emotion. Hell people even started that meme about Serena.
