How would people feel about a, lets say toggleable, difficulty level? Also what would be the best way to go about it?

Also, I meant more along the lines of say, would you be able to change it througout the game say if you got half way through then realized you're too shit to do it? Or would you have to restart and lose all your mon?

Pokemon will never be difficult until levels and trading stop existing.
Other RPG may be difficult because even if you grind enemies have unique moves, bumped up stats and possible kill spells. Pokemon has nothing of the sort.

Despite following the normal rules, Colosseum and Gale of Darkness were more difficult uniquely because grinding was hard, doubles were forced and the available Pokemon sucked.

The only way a Pokemon game can be hard is by playing the Combat games, like Stadium or Battle Revolution. Fixed levels, no trading, fixed rules, everyone is the same.

Yeah I guess you're right. Maybe just have a confirmation when you pick anything higher than "normal". My biggest problem with fucking XY was the easy as fuck difficulty, not only due to the XP share but also just the low as fuck level'd e4 which only had 4 pokemon apiece and couldn't be challenged a second time at higher level.

I've just resorted to using shitmons in story mode. Much more interesting and satisfying that way.

I used the same Thunder Fang Poochyena from the dexnav tutorial for my entire playthrough. It swept Phoebe of course.

Don't lower XP or raise the levels, that just makes for a slog.

Just give trainers more Pokemon with better movesets / natures / abilities / held items and an AI able to capitalize on those advantages. Gym leaders especially should have a full team of six past, say, the third gym. That's really all that needs to be done.

Usually in RPGs like this even if you can't beat a boss you can always grind until you are a high enough level to beat them, so if you want an "expert" level difficulty I would say the only way to ensure maximum difficulty would be to make it so that you don't gain exp. from killing wild pokemon and make the amount of prize money you can get from beating trainers more limited so you can't just overstock on healing items. Make the game sort of like GBA Fire Emblem games except your Pokemon don't die. I would also probably force the game to put you in set mode instead of shift for good measure.

Then I would give everyone better AI, even normal trainers, give them more pokemon (gym leaders always having a full team by the 6th gym) and make them fully EV trained but with only average IVs. I would also NOT make pokemon rediculously over leveled (except MAYBE the E4/champion) because that is just a stupid way to artificially raise the dificulty level. No, make the AI actually good and give them actually decent Pokemon. Appropriate level scaling very important, it should be scaled with the assumption that the player has fought all of the NPCs to endure difficulty.

This might seem a bit too difficult, which is why I think an "expert mode" should only be unlocked after beating the game on a hard mode which would be available at the beginig of the game. Hard mode would have grinding, not as good AI and more prize money for winning. I think it should be just a little bit harder than the difficulty level of DPP. Normal would be the difficulty level of lets say BW2 and easy would be ORAS levels of difficulty.

Holy shit I typed a lot more than I was expecting to. Anyway this is what I would like to see happen but I think it has an approximately .00001% chance of happening.

I'd probably just leave it at a scaling difficulty in terms of IV and EV trained pokemon as well as type coverage for gym leaders making the values and coverage higher for each setting.

Maison trainers only switch when they can't touch you (eg: a CB Hitmonlee HJK against a ghost) but otherwise will stay in indefinitely.
Which is why the best strategy for the past 12 years now has been to cripple them from the start and start set-up sweeping.

Higher levels and lower exp is fake difficulty. I want all gyms to have 6 Pokémon for a start, with diverse typing where possible. Maybe a Mega on all of them (and megas in turn are withheld from the PC until postgame).

I'd actually like it if the trainer can only do a resisted attack against your current mon, they'll switch. Higher levels is basically an artificial difficulty (you can catch up if you grind rather than using actual strategy).

This is not exactly how it's done. The only difference is only to spend a couple more hours grinding. AI must resort to nastier tricks at higher difficulties, like foes with at least double or triple HP as your mons, and gym leaders with actual strategies if you want to use their weaknesses at them. Even using revives at higher difficulties.

Choose when you start up a new game

You could rename them so that casuals don't feel bad for picking easy and veterans eel badass for picking the hardest difficulty.

Each difficulty makes the dungeon and gym puzzles harder as well as making the opponent teams and such better as well as increasing the AI.
