I have a separate theme for sysnand that is basic and just says "SYSNAND" in big bold letters to tell me not to use it, while emunand is a custom theme for aesthetic purposes. This is really useful to have if you use homebrew a lot, since you don't want to overwrite the sysnand by accident. Custom themes aren't just for looking at, but can be useful for other things. Again, distinguishing sysnand and emunand is one example.

I don't understand why you insist on this so much. Does it actually matter which one is better to you? Custom themes are superior in that they let you use anything you want as a theme and are good for people who like to make them or use hacked 3ds and want more options.

But you do get shitty themes sometimes and if you don't make your own themes, that's something you will have to deal with. It's still a free option and offers more freedom than what Nintendo gives you by default.
