I haven't seen it done in Gen 2 but I have seen it done in Gen 1, Maize specifically. It doesn't seem like it'd be that hard to pull off if you knew assembly, you'd need to create a new tile with a function that takes you to a new map (the dive map specifically) if you use Dive. You'd probably want to make the above-water and underwater 1:1 in size so you can keep the coordinates instead of needing to create new code to determine where on the underwater map you'd spawn.

Also would need a way to have water tiles that don't cause wild encounters and tiles that do; you might be able to cheese it and treat the map as a land map if you do something to keep your sprite as the Surf sprite.

This is just me theorizing, by the way, I'm pretty shit at assembly coding.

A Move invigilator
Basically if a pokemon knows an egg move, TM or some other move that's also compatible with your other pokemon, this NPC can make this mon teach that pokemon the move. Makes raising shitmons that learn good moves early worthwhile

HMs only requiring you have compatible pokemon to use them on the field, so you still need the pokemon but don't have to clog up the moveset.

If you're talking about pic it definitely has an eight-Gym storyline, they just refluff Gyms as being owned by the police which is why you're attacking them. The game is just a rearranged Red, like most early Gen 1 hacks.

I still think they could do good by sticking more accurately to the source maps, like that demo of an Gen 2 Emerald from a few years ago (don't look it up unless maybe you're the anon working on the new one and want to use the old one as reference as what to do/not to do, since it was pretty bad; just look at the awful color palette here).

I write out the music in Gen 2's audio notation then compile it with the pokecrystal disassembly. I don't use any tools; I tried using a tool that turns MIDI into assembly code but it was written in a different style than the disassembly's audio so I just do it by hand.

Several days of work here and there on this map have finally brought a workable draft into fruition. The first draft I found to be unnecessarily long and pointless, but with the help of /heg/ I've created a large map with focus.
Red are trainers, yellow is item, blue is event.
The event is a Team Rocket shakedown of the Old Rod giving Fishing Guru that the player has to stop. It essentially kicks off the TR plot.
The cave was initially to hold a Regi, but I've pared the legendaries down from 20 to 5; it's just better that way. Instead it'll be a Fire Cave.
A few more interiors and I'll be ready to move on to Celadon-Vermillion part of the mapping process.

Not quite; repels should take care of the encounters. I'd suggest foregoing the DUDE SANDSTORMS LMAO motif in favor of extreme sunlight-it is a desert, after all-but that's just me. The maze is pretty straightforward with benefit of seeing the entire map at once, I'm sure it'll frustrate some players though. Too much encounter tiles though, needs occasional breaks-ESPECIALLY with arena trapped mons.
All in all a solid map; another couple passes at it should finish her up!

Yeah, I ended up leaving those out for this section of the song on purpose.

It's all subjective and I've seen people making Gen 2 music where they try to squeeze in as much of the original song as possible so some people definitely like it, but I think if you try to switch between different parts of a song too quickly you create something cluttered and the switching ends up being distracted. To give an example that's really jarring to me, look at FroggiestSpirit's Route 203 cover; not the one on Youtube because that one's not bad at all, but the revised version you can find on the current version of CrystalComplete. There's some nasty-sounding shit going on with the bassline in a couple spots because the composer tries squeezing two things in at once, thinking they could fit together. And, while they technically do squeeze in together, the sudden jarring beeps rapidly going in and out give the channel no room to breathe and it just sounds bad. No offense to FroggiestSpirit of course, I like a lot of his other covers.

Another example would be a lot of the TCG2 ports in the aforementioned CrystalComplete (and some of the TCG1 ports but it's more common with 2). GR Normal Duel is a particularly terrible one, which is a shame because the original theme is fantastic for something on the Game Boy. Just listen to this shit it's great

However, they tried adding more layers and thicker chords when the person porting the TCG2 songs got to it, and the end result is fucking atrocious, it's just one giant cacophany. It's a really extreme example but I really suggest looking at those two songs on the CrystalComplete ROM to get an idea of what I'm talking about.

While this isn't nearly as extreme as that second example and more on par with the first, the bells go in and out a lot in the first half of the song while the background harmony stays constant. To try to switch them would be jarring, and the bells on their own wouldn't hold up the song enough, so I chose to forgo them in that specific section. The trumpet, on the other hand, only has a one very short lull and moves the song forward much more than the bells, so it wasn't any issue putting it in as the main attraction on that sound channel and forgoing the background.

The second half of the song, fortunately, does have more open opportunities to put the bells in, since there are several sections where there are only three melodic parts total including the bells, so I'll definitely be able to make use of them without cluttering the song. It probably sounds silly that I always simultaneously worry about sounding cluttered and sounding empty, but they aren't necessarily mutually exclusive; you can have a song with too many things going on at once but not enough meaningful movement to make you hooked on the song. There's probably better terminology I could use to try to convey what I mean but whatever.

I apologize for the textwall, I intended this to be a short explanation and I ended up feeling the need to go into detail on why I have the feelings instead of sounding like I was just dismissing the criticism.

Alright alright. I'll stay on-topic.

Okay so I'm making a fangame from scratch. I'm using RPG Maker VX Ace because I don't want to deal with any hardware limitations or the "It's made in Essentials so it's automatically bad/edgy" meme.
It's going to play more like a traditional JRPG or a Dungeon Crawler than an actual pokemon game. I plan to use 100% custom sprites and original music. The region is going to be a wintery metropolitan area with various environments in the outskirts.

Anyways, I have the capture mechanic already completed. Now I'm working on overworld navigation. You won't be grid-locked, not even in buildings or in dungeons. Instead of Fly you'll have to rely on warp points in the form of a taxi service. From the hub, the taxi will take you to any town or dungeon you've already visited, but from anywhere else it'll just take you back to the hub.

VX doesn't have layers so I'm using a parallax mapping trick to design the overworlds without the use of a tileset. I can't figure out how to make buildings and the like overlap the player, so I'll just make the entire building a solid object for the time being. There is a layered parallax script that I want to use, but it's written in broken English, so it'll take time for me to reassemble it.

I wanted to post a pic of the collision maps, but for whatever reason I can only show the character hitboxes.

What did I miss?

Anyways, got an idea and wanna run it by before I start putting it in my game in case y'all have suggestions.

Since I have following Pokemon, going to make hidden touch events scattered throughout routes.

Some are automatic. You touch it, dialogue says your following Pokemon is exhausted and looks drowsy. It gets a sleep status. Theres ten events total, 5 status effects and 5 where they pick up an item, so it can be good or bad.

Then there are choice events. When you touch them, they give a choice. Your Pokemon is growling at something. Do you calm it or let it keep growling? If you calm it, the thing might be bad and attack, leaving a status, or it might be a rare Pokemon that you can fight. If you don't calm, your Pokemon might scare away a rare Pokemon, or scare away something that would have done a beating on your Pokemon. It's also possible that nothing happens.

Basically just to add some world building and status consequences outside of battle.

My script is a far easier to work with. As a dev, you can host an event through pastebin using dev-friendly parameters instead of a solid block of seemingly random code.

Working on giving the original tileset a bit more diversity and making it more natural. All furniture will have a dark, light, and red wood version. Just started on the beds here, gonna make them different colors and have some with ornate headboards. In my game, I want to improve certain aspects of the game to make it more balanced in multiplayer and fun in single player.
Some ways I've come with to do this are:

-Implementing the mechanic of Field Abilities, which grant utility outside of battle with a certain amount of badges.

-Some Pokémon receive an attributes called Pokebodies, which grant them secondary abilities like Levitate, Static, and Flame Body

Steel is a very resonant medium, as is Ice.
Heavy sounds can put out fires as well.
Ghosts are heavily influenced by loud sounds as well.

Grounded sounds, like the ones generated by earthquakes, can travel far depending on the density of macroscopic obstructions like rocks, which do not conduct sounds as well due to their rigidity and nonconforming shape, hence why rock resists but ground doesn't.

I chose sound as a balancing type because of how naturally it balances the game, yet has already technically been officially implemented in the designs of both pokémon and moves

I don't think growl has to much going for it as a sound move, even flavor-wise. Sure, it's sound based, but it's so common, so weak, and found so early in game, there's almost no point in considering it. To me, it's in the same category as pound, which in every sense, could just as easily be a fighting move.
There will still be "Sound-Based" moves that attack behind substitutes and are reflected with soundproof, so moves like growl and bug buzz are just fine.

Politoed has very little to do with sound but a few pokedex entries and perish song.
Maractus? I get the maracas, but I feel it doesn't validate a type either.
As far as I know, nothing canon has suggested that Drowzee and Hypno use sound during any of it's abilities.
Noibat and Noivern have great descriptive typings already. If anything I'd change it to Sound/Dragon with Pokébody Levitate

Very nice tiles, man. I started out using FRLG. I love the style of GSC because of nostalgia and "best-gen"ery.

Here's an updated version of the tileset I posted before, I've sorted through tile types, done a few recolors (trying to stay faithful to the palette and keep everything consistent), and added a couple new types as well as clip some unnecessary stuff.

You're thinking of the Gen 1 721 project, of which it's still currently adding Johtomons, I think it's up to #200 exactly last I checked. The Hoenn starters in pic are just placeholder slots to test having more than 256 Pokémon.

There currently aren't any GSC hacks that have expanded the Dex beyond its normal amount (unless there's a finished hack that uses the two open slots in the game but I don't think that really counts). To make something like that would require rewriting a LOT of code in pretty much all areas of the game that deal with Pokémon, to use two bytes for species data instead of one. The reason Red has an expanded dex project mentioned above is because someone took the time to actually rewrite all of the relevant code for that game. Wait for someone with autism besides me because I have a toddler's understanding of .asm and can't touch anything engine-related without breaking a million things in ways I don't understand to take interest in it, when they do you might start seeing expanded dex hacks for Crystal.

I need a recommnedation for a nice Pokemon Red hack that would produce a save file compatible with regular game (so no stat, moveset, or map modifications)

This is because I plan to play Pokemon Stadium with it later on (I can backup and restore save files from cartridge with my Everdrive64), and I plan to play it on my phone for better convenience. Still, I would like to take advantage of any improvement hack that would make the game a bit fresher for this run.

I guess that's about all I'll get. There's another hack that adds a running option but it isn't compatible with the colorization. What a waste.

Made some fancier beds today and started making the room "sets" based on wood color and color combos. going along pretty well, these are just messy cobbled together rooms to show most of whats been made so far.

This one is more subjective since their motive is to revert the new Pokemon League rulings (10 gyms, only 5 badges needed to have a chance at fighting the elite four, Pokemon League has complete control of the pokemon box system). But since the rules themselves aren't all that bad, and doesn't really restrict the trainers too much, it might seem kinda pointless.

Following things should be made into pokebodies.
>Burn immunity and Water veil
>Poison/Tox immunity and immunity (the ability)
>Paralysis immunity and Limber
>Powder Immunity and Overcoat
>Freeze immunity and Magma armour.
If a pokemon that would logically get a poison immunity has poison heal/tox boost just give them something new and cooler. Poison heal was ass cancer anyway.

Also these should be just passive 'things' a lot of pokemon have instead of abilities;

I think Poison Heal can stay. It just doesn't need to yield DOUBLE damage.
The concept is great, but effect is a little overboard.

In order to do this, I need to add some stuff to the stock Essentials scripts. It's probably a lot easier than adding it an official game. My project started as a BW2 rom hack that actually got pretty far, but the difficulties in editing mechanics is what lead to me redoing it.

Well, my only critique is the uneven treeline. I'd fix this by moving the eastern gatehouse up one tile or down a few tiles to allow your upper trees to match the rest.

Kanto Roads here. Just wanted to get feedback on if the hedge maze is good enough and show off a little of what I've done to Cerulean. The waterfall was initially supposed to come down off Route 23 but with how I've made the slope of Mt. Moon shorter it needed to be closer to Route 4.
Cerulean Cave is accessible as soon as the player gets surf and leads through to the Power Plant. No more Mewtwo, but I'm sure I can find some cool things to stick in there..
Thank god for block editing. I never really understood how the bridge was a bridge if it were on land. Darker water tiles are supposed to convey depth in order to keep the reservoir a manageable size. A park for the view; I had that little building (the Cerulean Engineering Corps) over where the faded grass tiles are, but it blocked the view. Closer to the Power Plant is better anyways.
Not sure what to do with the empty space between Mart and Center.
Cerulean originally had like 5 enterable houses. I thought it was overkill. I know it says Cerulean CITY but I like to think of it more as a suburb of Saffron.
Had a lot of leftover space on the bottom that I wasn't sure what to do with so this is what I have for now.
Do you think Lt. Surge named his house Lightning America?
