Pretty sure the guy is not being serious. It was May's success that paved the way for all the girls who came after her. Had May been received like Tracey was the writers might have very well brought back Misty and reunited the original trio for the DP arc. Dawn probably would have never been a main character because the writers would have viewed removing Misty with May as a mistake.

Pretty much the only reason Dawn/Serena exist as main characters is because of May.

Character design, May. She has that sporty "I'm actually going to travel the countryside beating animals to death" look. Dawn looks more like she is going for a refreshing stroll today. It isn't a BAD design, so to speak, but it is harder to believe she is a Trainer.
In terms of character implementation, Dawn, no question. Her character develops organically, progresses realistically, and actually ends her gen a better person than she began.

In terms of team for a Pokemon battle, probably May. May had a bit more time to iron out that team than Dawn did, and Dawn is much more comfortable in her role as a coordinator. Plus, May has EZ chicken.

In terms of Body, May is a sexual tyrannosaurus, boasting a body at ten that can make proper adults envious. The progression of her body over the next twelve or so years is both tantalizing and terrifying. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing is up to you, I guess.

Personality: May gets a lot of rap for her bland personality, but part of this is actually the fault of Max. See, they have a tendency to blur together in-show, and their characters do not complement each-other very well. I have to say this one is indeterminate, as Dawn did not have this downfall.

Hat: While Dawn does pull of a certain amount of swag with that hat, it was already worn by Brendon, more or less. Then again, it is hard to define what May wears as a "hat", so I dunno. May's "hat" is closer to a bare head, and May wins the bare head award. So yay?

I only wish May had full co-star status in AG like Dawn had in DP. There were a lot of things May didn't get to do in the series that they did with Dawn, and I wish the writers allowed her to be more active outside her main episodes.
