I can agree with both of these statements.
I like all pokemon games, but HGSS was the best.
It could have been ORAS, but it was just missing so much.
XY wasn't bad, it was just lame and lacked luster.

In my recent playthrough I just grinded (ground?) on the e4 until I was high enough level to clear them. There's also gym leader and trainer rematches but I didn't bother with that shit because it's a pain in the ass.

You mean for red? if you're talking about that its not really a fair comparison considering red is like the final rival battle in modern games and the game does give you several avenues to grind at that point from trainer rematches, gym leader rematches and elite four rematches.

If you're talking about main game though, trainers definetely give you enough to get all the way up to past gary and your levels will be balanced for the current challenge. It was like that even in the original, it just lacked grinding once you got to red.

Why would you need to grind in any Pokemon game ever? If you just mean for beating the game. I trained a team of 5 Pokemon and went out of my way to get the least training as possible by avoiding all wild battles and still the only hard fight was against Red who I lost to once. And I didn't grind to beat him either. Or are you someone who has to one shot every opponent Pokemon and if you can't you think you need to grind.
