I agree that Recover, Ghost STAB, Energy Ball, and Wilo+Hex is nice. If you need a Waterfall slave though Sammy does it alongside having significantly higher Attack and Special Attack on the side which allows it to run physical and special moves to great effect. The Jellyfish can't even boost it's offenses and lacks priority. You could at least mention that it has much better bulk going for it.

In BW2 I dropped Samurott for a Dream World Omanyte with Weak Armor. It was actually pretty fun. It's a shame that Dream World is gone forever. Such a cool idea.

I always appreciated Charmander because you of the interesting ways you could build your team around it.

Squirtle's cool but I dunno, I feel like it's kind of a waste at the same time? Kanto is filled with some memorable/cool/cute/varied water types in general, the typing is so varied so there's all kinds of creativity you can go for despite Gun Turtle seeming cool on paper. I was generally a Poliwrath mark myself, but with the recent VC release of Red I trained a Kingler, and now it's one of my favorite HM slaves.

Fire type selection on the other hand is pretty wack, if you even care enough to get an obligatory fire type. You either get the starter, a few dull quadrupeds (I respect the Ninetails though), and the most garbage Eevee-lution ever. I always had Red so I never had an opinion on Magmar either way, though it's pretty dumb how such a limited breed has version exclusivity in the first place, and I'm pretty sure you catch that thing too far into the game anyway.

I can respect the Bulbasaur pick though, but it's easy to get lazy in the beginning of the game for me and in Gen 1 you kinda have to grab a Spearow or do some pace-halting grind to deal with Viridian Forest. Also Weepingbell is cute : 3
