How would you define a Pokémon Generation?

The period of time in which there exists a certain number of Pokémon. Every time new Pokémon are introduced, a new generation is born. See: actual definition of the word "generation", and relate it to Pokémon.

New region.
New protagonists.

Battle compatibility. If it can't battle with previous gens it's a new gen. If it can then it's whatever generation of games it can battle against.

Gen 1 can only battle against other Gen 1 games, Gen 2 can only battle against other Gen 2 games, Gen 3 can only battle against other Gen 3 games, etc

There were at least a few things that gave Sylveon away, but they could still be regarded as something not unusual as well. What we have now is something that regardless of how it's seen, it's very unusual. The most mundane thing about it is just a breach in protocol as we know it. I'm sorry to say that this case makes all instances of gen 7 unlikely since they are all something we've seen before. However, it also discredits 6.5 since we've seen additions in the middle of a gen before as well. (true, not in a way that adds numbers to the dex, but functionally, it makes little difference, and it's also technically not true since the event pokemon are also "revealed" in the middle of a gen as well) Adding a new type after 3 gens of not doing so wouldn't really be new, either, but it was seen as unlikely. Which one more breaks a pattern? I can't tell, both follow a pattern of some form, although one has the technicality. Both options transform the way we would see pokemon forever. What gave Sylveon away, though, was that regardless of how one saw it, it still behaved oddly for anything that we're aware of. The roles reversed this time. Instead of the unusual being handwaved as mundane, it's the mundane being handwaved as unusual. I can't really say if the Sylveon analogy works for that or not.

tl;dr: I'm sorry, the matter is still inconclusive.
