I once did the math in a forum I was in at the time. Basically I assumed that, on average, one episode is one day and a half with some fluctuations (some episodes show 2 or 3 days, some episodes show half a day, most episodes show one day) and made the calculations from the first episode onwards.
So, there are 1450*1,5 days up to season 18 (we're on season 19 and I didn't bother looking up wow many epsiodes we're in) counting with movies and specials.

1450*1,5=2175
Every set of 4 years has 365*4+1 days so...
365*4+1=1461
2175/1461=1,5 (i rounded it up)
So if 1=4 years
1,5=6 years

Ash is 16 at the begining of XYZ, which is not totally unbelievable.
