I'm almost positive Iris is supposed to be Southeast Asian or something. The other girls are more likely than not just interpreted as being Japanese. It's like how we'd interpret Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny to be American, even if it's never explicitly stated. Japanese girls dye their hair all the time, which explains Misty and Serena.

Generally in anime, black people are drawn more like pic related, and white people are almost always drawn with extremely blonde hair and blue eyes. This is so the audience can tell right away they're supposed to be foreigners. Chinese people are usually drawn with squinty eyes (like Brock) or with their hair in buns and dressed in qipaos since that's the stereotypical Chinese appearance to Japanese people.
