I just name them whatever feels right at the time.
It can be anything from a reference to something, to a human name to just calling them "Butt".
I think the most meaningful nickname I've ever given is "The Evader" to a Shiny Zigzagoon I caught in Y after many years of having failed to catch a shiny Ziggerzagger in Ruby

Pokemon need to earn their nickname. I only nickname them after they've proven their worth in battle.

What I do is gather my Bros ans Sis's and I'll usually remember their names, then later I catch all the rest when the names been burned into memory.

It's not that hard. Especially since there's a variety of things to name them. Name them after humans, celebrities, actual animals, myths, heroes, fiction, nature, objects, etc. The sky is the limit, and bullshittery can be sincere.
Heck, I named a spearow "Shine" because it mentioned mirror move in its pokedex entry, and I still loved it.

I don't nickname my Pokemon cause literally every name thread I've come across here on /vp/ just shows how fucking stupid and unoriginal the names are. Leave the Pokemon to their native names. I don't want to see people naming their Pokemon after other things, nor after stupid pet names one would name their dog. Absolutely sad and disgusting that people even CONSIDER naming their mons.
