While first stages of starters tend to have big heads, evolutions have the ""right"" proportions that you talk about (look at Chespin then Chesnaught, Oshawott and then Samurott), so why bother?

I guess there is not reason for him NOT to have a normal sized head, but I feel like that's already normal for him. Its based off of a geeko/lizard, isn't it? Their heads are usually big, and since its based off of one I can see why his head would be that size.

I think when the release red and blue they didn't realise how huge the franchise would become so many of the sprites look a bit dodgey however they mostly fixed that in yellow.

OP is an idiot and doesn't understand character design. Within design, characters with larger heads appeal to children and characters with smaller heads appear more mature. (check out editorial illustration and you will notice a lot of smaller heads)

On top of that anyone who claims newer gen designs suck is also an actual retard because how the fuck can you expect someone to design something in a market 20 years later and have the same feel/style/design. That's like a grandfather going to a fashion show and being pissed none of the clothes look like they did in his generation.

You bring up a great point though with charizard; charmander's larger head reinforces it's childish/young design which in contrast with Charizard's smaller head really shows the design choice of making Charmander > Charizard be about growth and maturity.
