RL Animals yet to be Pokemon

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

These (5) were literally the only animals I could think of on my own that have yet to be made into official Pokemon. Can anyone else think of others that they haven't covered yet?

Yes.

They could do so very easily, if the designs were dissimilar enough. It wouldn't be the first time they made another Pokemon based on the same species, but they always manage to do so in a way that makes them feel different.

>but all these weird ass sea critters are like... The easy way out when trying to think of animals that aren't Pokemon yet.

I wasn't aware that this is some sort of contest, I thought this thread was about animals that haven't been done that we'd like to see. Deep sea life is absolutely fascinating and endlessly varied, I think it's a damn shame that we've only got, what, three Pokemon in that vein? And one of them (Lanturn) doesn't even get the big fangy maw that anglerfish are known for. I want more scary and weird-looking ocean-based Pokemon, even if getting to them doesn't require Dive.
>>
>>25800049
Completely agreed there! Lanturn is a failure when it comes to a lantern fish. There are endless possibilities for water Pokemon they could add, basically. They should make sure to knock out a good dozen or so for each new gen, IMO.
>>
>>25799738

Kiwis
Anything from Madagascar
Devil/angel rays
Lots of weird deep sea fish
Komodo Dragons/other monitor lizards
Iguanas (could do something interesting with the whole marine/land dichotomy, and the fact that hybrids are superior to the parent species in every way)
Lots of weird cryptids, if those count.
Many weird-ass tropical birds
Sea Spiders (don't look that up)
Marlin/swordfish
Nightjars/frogmouths
Echidnas
Harvestmen

Southern Elephant Seals (this one you should look up)

Kangaskhan not having the same strong jumping legs as most kangaroos is the only reason people aren't satisfied with it. Lacking one trait doesn't stop it from being a kangaroo.

Let's examine this statement using other gen 1 mons. Compare Blastoise' head to a snapping turtle's and you will find that the only real difference is the ears. Sandslash' face is quite similar to a pangolin's. Nidoking's head, and Nidoking in general, are pretty much a replica of Baragon. Rapidash's head is hardly stylised at all. In contrast, Kangaskhan's head looks more like a theropod's than a kangaroo's.

>Let's examine this statement using other gen 1 mons.
Not really sure how you can be satified with Blastoise with your criterias, the ears are already something entirely different and it doesn't have a sharp beak either.
Pokémon like Nidoking and Rhydon would be the best to compare to, which are in a similar spot to Kangaskhan. They all have fairly strong reptilian traits in their faces due to their kaiju inspiration, but it's still visible that rabbits and rhinoceroses were part of the inspiration as well.

>>25801766
With all due respect the only thing Ho-Oh has from the peacock is the head crest, and it's almost certainly from ancient depictions of phoenixes which were probably themselves inspired by peacocks. Saying "it has bright colours" and "it has tail feathers" does not make any Pokemon any thing, because every single Pokemon has colours that differ from the real-life basis on account of being fictional animals designed to appeal to children.

Peacocks can only maintain flight for very short distances, as opposed to the phoenix Ho-Oh is based on who flies to the tops of towers.

In short, if a Pokemon does not have feathers it can use in a configuration as in this image, it's just plain not a peacock. There's no two ways about it. Yes, Pokemon draw inspiration from multiple sources but to say "here's your peacock" is simply gasping at straws to fill quotas. There is no primarily peacock-based Pokemon as yet.

The name only contains "mane" in English, and English names are completely irrelevant. The defining trait of maned wolves is the extremely slender body and coloration.
The mane isn't significantly bigger than that of other wolves, I would even say that the Russian wolf has a bigger mane, and it is a subspecies of the Gray Wolf.

moose pokemon?

>>25802449
Nah, people want stylized pokemon who look like animals. For example, Excadrill is heavily stylized, yet is instantly recognized as a mole. It's an example of good animal pokemon.
Kangaskhan is based on kangaroo, but looks like some mutated dino. It's an example of bad animal pokemon (even though design itself is pretty neat).

There are many different species of crows and raven. Take the thick-billed raven for example, it's at least as different from a common raven as a lion is from a tiger.

It's not a competition, no. I guess I should have been more specific when I started the thread, but I'm mainly looking for common animals. Animals everyone knows and easily recognizes. (Would a 7 year old know all of those obscure deep sea creatures? No.) I'm also not looking for things that are technically different animals, but so close you can hardly tell the difference. (Or things that don't have a "proper" version yet, since that's really only opinion anyways.)

I'm really only making this list for myself though. So others can feel free to make their own and include all of the closely related species or obscure animals on theirs!

>I am extremely ignorant of the world, so everyone else must be as well!

How many kids do you think know what species Gorebyss is based on? Manaphy? Pokemon needing to be recognizable as being "such and such animal" just so kids know what it is has NEVER been a thing, nor should it ever be. If Game Freak decided to only stick to the things your average five-year-old knows as the basis for their designs, Pokemon would be fucking boring as shit. Kids don't care if they can figure out why a Pokemon is designed the way it is without looking it up, they care about cool monsters.

That really isn't an excuse. Do you have any idea how little people know Pistol Shrimps or half of the references Ghost Pokemon are derived from?

Common knowledge, much less common western knowledge isn't necessarily what's considered to make a Pokemon design. I don't know what horse you rode on, but kinda get off.

>>
>>25804951
Ninetales isn't a red fox. "Red Fox" is a specific species of urban fox: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_fox

Ninetales' fur isn't red. It's more based on fjust general foxes, but really it's just based on a kitsune. Sure, it looks like a yellow red fox with nine tails, but that is a kitsune. It's like saying Wailord is based on a fish as well as a whale because it has fins and a tail.
>>
>>25805423
Do you even read the article you're linking to?
The red fox is by far the most populous true fox species, the red fox is the general fox. Like the grey wolf is the general wolf.
>Sure, it looks like a yellow red fox with nine tails, but that is a kitsune. It's like saying Wailord is based on a fish as well as a whale because it has fins and a tail.
Please, please by joking. That analogy isn't even remotely the same. The kitsune is a mythical fox, and the red fox is the only fox species found in Japan so there is no question about a the kitsune having basis in the red fox.
