Don't know if I really agree with that. Off of the top of my head the only ones that really fall into that category are Rhyperior, Tangrowth (which I actually think looks pretty good in spite of that), Lickilicky, Gliscor (also looks pretty good in my opinion.) and maybe Mismagius. I don't think they all look great, but I feel like they for the most part did a good job of at least making them obviously related but also distinct from their pre-evolutions.

Hey, if the based Pansear guy is still around, who said they would be willing to do a request for me than here is my request.

If you were willing to do me the solid of a gen 1 Flygon I would have some thoughts on the matter. I have no problems with Flygon's design but if he was going Gen1 I would probably expect him to adapt some more generic dragon-like wings. I imagine the goggles would need to be kept to hold on to the dragonfly origins, and i imagine them staying red is alright. Maybe a larger head proportional to the body and I'm not sure the stark reds would stick around on the body. Possibly replaced by more natural colors. I imagine his feet would probably get toes or more likely toe-like claws. If you were to take on my request I'm sure you have your own thoughts, definitely go with yours first, as you have a great grasp on it. Whether or not you do, keep up the good work guy.

Magneton goes from three attached magnemites into one solid fucking UFO that looks nothing like any of the other two stages. Mamoswine goes from a lump of fur into something that actually resembles an animal. Togekiss loses its entire neck and arms. Dusknoir might as well be a different pokemon entirely. I disagree but I think the changes need to be minor. Keep the white on the chest as it's handkerchief theme, maybe remove the lines (maybe not) and shape the head to more naturally move into the body while making the tongue a little more naturally curved. Also maybe give the swirl on the top of the head a forward swirl like Clefairy and Jigglypuff.

Yeah I'm currently working on changing it and the swirl and head separation, as well tad the awkward shape of the tongue, are the areas I'm focusing on changing. I also altered the color scheme a little bit, making it slightly more pastel-like to fit in with the early gens versus the bold pink and yellow it has now.

This thread is very interesting and helpful.

I'm an avid Pokemon fan and I'm also designing characters for an unrelated game I'm working on (pic related), and everyone makes a comparison between my designs and newer Pokemon designs.

There's a lot of design sensibilities found in the old gens that I really envy. They were a lot more respectful of their creatures back then, and kept an impossibly concise balance between fantasy and reality.

Tl;dr I wanna be able to learn to "gen-1-ify" my own designs, so to speak.

I don't think the gen 1 designs have any more "respect" put into them than newer designs. At best you could say maybe they were less designed to be appealingly merchandised for kids back in the day, but I think that implies that's an inherently bad thing when despite the evil corporate money schemes, that can still produce designs that are as good or better than ones made before they realized what they had.
