Johto is my favourite, but I like Kanto's simplicity as well. (Many a bit too simple, but it was the first so I'll give it a little leeway)

Alright let me explain what made Sinnoh the comfiest region in the franchise.

First off, the color are much less vibrant than any in Hoenn, you start off the game and the environment around makes you feel cozy.

Then immediately 5 minutes into the game you go to lake Verity and you get hit by this theme right here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PbnT0x0e5I
Hands down one of the most relaxing tracks in all of pokemon. You hear Cyrus talking about abstract things, like time, space and the world in general. You feel relaxed.

Now you feel like you're right at home. You want to grab a cup of hot chocolate and sit by the fireplace and listen to this old professor tell stories.

Sinnoh's winter climate also plays a role, since Winter is the comfiest season of the year.

If I had to summarize it all, I'd say that Hoenn feels like Summer, like running around outside, meeting new people and going on random adventures. It sounds cool, but in the end you end up sweaty, smelly and with a headache.

Sinnoh feels like a cold winter day and you're sitting inside cuddled up in your blanket by the fireplace and just play pokemon. You may fall asleep later at that spot, feeling warm and happy.

Not him, but you must not remember Roark's Cranidos. That thing could rape your asshole clean with headbutt if it's faster than you or you don't manage to 2hko it. If it flinches you once, your pokemon is definitely dead given that it survived the headbutt in the first place.

I think that one of the best parts is that you can take a break from the game if you want and just chill. Hearthome City, in particular, has Pokemon contests, the little Poké park (try and tell me that shit ain't comfy) and the poffin making game. Veilstone had a badass casino and a shopping mall. The library where you can read some dope lore, and tons of hidden secrets to find. The after-game was also fantastic.

I liked the heavy HM usage because it made certain areas more difficult to get to than others, which made it easier to find things you didnt find the first or second or even third time through an area which made exploring Sinnoh more rewarding.

Kanto, looking back, was fun, but kind of empty. I know it was the first, but it hasn't aged well compared to even G/S. FR/LG actually felt worse than R/B, which at least have the classic feel going for them.

Johto is consistently the second best region in my book, having a wider area to explore, a fun spread of Pokemon, and an even better implementation of Team Rocket than R/B had. HG/SS actually made this even better by expanding on the rival character a little more, even redeeming him when he's training in the Dragon's Den and you get to double battle alongside him. Seeing that he has a Crobat, you know the lesson truly stuck with him. The Celebi event also adds to the story, but I feel it hurts Giovanni's character. Remember the end of the 4-part Pokemon Origins, where Giovanni dismantles Team Rocket after realizing what he had been missing out on? And how he did similar after the gym match in R/B to become a researcher or something? I felt that was a better end to his story, but at the same time, stopping Team Rocket in two places at once is pretty cool.

Hoenn is... Ugh, where do I start? The region feels cluttered. The games aren't as fun as those before or after. And Hoenn was where legendaries became a focal point in the story, they should have always been a bonus. If there's a small bonus story featuring a hunt for them (like the one featuring Heatran in Gen 4), then great. This was also the first region with remakes. Justified, as it also broke compatibility. OR/AS only redeemed the gen slightly by improving everything, but it's like using air freshener in the bathroom. It can only do so much.

Part 2

Sinnoh is the most creatively designed region in my eyes, and would have been even more fun to explore if not for the absolutely droll gameplay. HMs were necessary almost everywhere, the battles were terribly slow, and there was too much terrain that slows your movement. HG/SS fixed a decent amount, luckily, and had the Pokewalker.

Unova did a lot of things right, from the few new encounter mechanics to the new battle styles (triple and rotation are both a lot of fun) to the Dream World to the online random matchup system (the predecessor to the Battle Spot). Even the seasons were a fun gimmick. That being said, the games had felt more linear since Hoenn, but came to a head here with the region being able to loop around easily but one entire direction being cut off until you got close to the end. They should have arranged it differently so that you could go back and forth, and maybe even challenge one or two gyms in a different order if you so chose (like Koga and Sabrina in R/B). Also, if you didn't want to change your DS's clock, you were at the mercy of the seasons, making the gimmick a problem in some cases. The sequels were also great, far more creative than some third version would have been.

Kalos has, subjectively, the most fun gameplay to date. The running speed is a good pace, the roller blades are fun, and the bike is perfectly functional despite only coming in two colors, neither of which even match with France's flag. The Battle Spot and Wonder Trade have made both functions more entertaining, and having Wifi tournaments has made competition accessible to a wider variety of people, also allowing them to launch more gimmick tournaments, which I personally enjoy a great deal. Mega Evolution... I could take it or leave it. While it's a fun mechanic, it's definitely a change from the norm, but I feel it makes people reconsider old strategies and adds more to build around.
