They're variations based on the father.
The mother still determines the specie, but the father's specie leads to some characteristics.

Fusion is when you straight up make a new design based on features from both, which some people actually call variants. Basically the difference is that variants are meant to be subtler.

The art is fine but the anatomy of the Pokemon doesn't change significantly like it does with Shellder. It's like the artist completely forgot what Pokemon originally bit the tail. I don't understand why so many people have a problem with arvalis' art. His entire goal is to make pokemon seem 'realistic'. Ghosts aren't realistic, so he turns it into something that is realistic that could give the illusion of being a ghost because that at least makes some sense.

Coming up with ideas for why such creatures would actually exist in a 'realistic' environment is way more interesting and impressive than just drawing on some more hairs and shadows. It's as if you guys think he's bastardising or is somehow going to ruin pokemon by drawing them differently
