Could be that they are supposed to be related species. Despite having attributes from different real world animals that are nothing alike, they are similar in some way.

I always thought of Rhydon as a cousin of the Nidofamily.

It's an offshoot that didn't evolve to be sexually dimorphic.

They have rabbit ears and evolve with a moon stone (rabbits are heavily associated with the moon in Japanese culture). That's pretty much it though. The Nidos are amalgamations of a lot of different animals but they definitely have some rabbit influence.
